Definitely a cool song - the dirtiest track on the album for sure. I like Stone/Jeff's break leading into the "And I sleep with the light on..." Love a bit of Ed wailing over a fadeout too - could've kept that going longer!

I wasn't aware that MC had imput on guitar riffs...does this mean Stone wrote the drum line?
Um, no. I kinda doubt that Stone writes drum parts. Matt does indeed write PJ songs on guitar ... I think Evacuation was the first that made an album. There's a interview from way back when he talks about running his guitar through a drum machine to get that great You Are chromatic pattern going (the part that Stone now plays live).

Matt writes all the songs that everybody hates.
everybody wants the most they can possibly get
for the least they could possibly do
Cropduster, Get Right! He's a misunderstood genius!
In Lost Dogs, Ed said this, "Matt Cameron writes songs and we run to find step stools in order to reach his level,...what comes naturally to him leaves us with our heads cocked like the confused dogs that we are,...eventually getting it. Did we mention he's the greatest drummer on the planet?"

Did no one read what I wrote? You do NOT get writing credits for drum beats, at all.
You know it IS possible that 2 people can sit around with guitars and come up with chords and phrasing of chords to get a rhythm going to create a song, which is what likely happened here. Matt had a riff to go along with his drum beat (hello, he wrote a riff, re-read if you need to) and it is likely Stone helped out with the direction, the "chorus" and bridge parts. It's possible Stone helped Matt with the riff as well, changing notes or whatnot, original idea by Matt with help from Stone
As for You Are, it's a Drum Sequencer made by Korg, that when the guitar is plugged into it, the sequence of the pattern breaks up the audio "thru" from the guitar.

Hey, speaking only for myself, you're preaching to the choir. I totally agree ... If indeed folks got writing credits for drumbeats, Matt would have a writing credit for every PJ song, post- and including Binaural.
Cool pic, by the way. I've love to muck around with one of these things.
i HATE most Matt songs except You Are. but he is fucking sick on this album. Especially on Johnny Guitar and GSMF. I dont even blame him for the Fixer sucking any more. i'm officially cool with Matt Cameron.
I like Matt's Riffs. BeforeI even knew they were his songs I loved You are and Cropduster; I never dug Evacuation and still skip that track about half the time I play Binaural; I have a special place in my heart for Unemployable, and In the Moonlight is pure, utter genuius!
Anyway, back to the main idea of the thread.
Johnny Guitar was the only track on the album that I didn't quite get. Today, when driving home from work I hit. ... probably my 12 full time through Backspacer .. and bam, it hit me. Don't know why it took so long, but I had a serious jam out going on for a few minutes.
Although, Force of Nature is still my favortie track on the album. We'll see what happens in a week.

It's not about agreeing, it's a fact. Joe Morrello didn't get a writing credit for Take 5, and the ONLY drummer to have an ACTUAL beat named after him is Bernard Purdie with the "Purdie Shuffle" and even HE doesn't get any writing credits with it.

I assume that means Matt wrote that crazily timed drum line, and Stone wrote the guitar parts.

matt likely wrote the riffs to syncopate correctly with his drum beat while stone used his input for the chorus' and bridge

I like a lot of his songs ... but he writes some weird, weird stuff.
