I love this song now, I think its really great musically and lyrically and its gonna be great live.

i agree...i liked the demo but i knew the band would do great things with it and i was right
  • demo, w/o a doube by far... i think the album version has too much going on in it...however i dont really see this as a problem, since i have the demo as well...that is the only fault that i see w the new album...if you wanna call it a fault... oh well...

regardless the flow of this album is spot on
it's largely due to eddie that i liked to jump off of things as a child...
  • When I first heard speed of sound (demo) I fell in love with it it was just amazing. It hit me personally cause of what I was going through, so I love the lyrics. And I remember thinking I hope the album version isnt much different. I played the Album version and I dont like it at all its like a happy drum beat with sad lyrics it just confuses the brain. I think they only added drums cause it would be too similar to Just Breathe and The End. So I must say the demo version is best and for me personally would have worked better without the drums just the way it was in the demo but I understand why they put drums in it. The only thing I dont understand is why they put 1980s organ in it hahaha.
  • in the case of 'speed of sound', less was more.

i like the demo much better. the backspacer version is good, but just not as good as the demo. the more-produced version changes the feel of the song, i think. it sounds more full and the literal "emptiness" of the song is lost. the demo had some really quiet moments that i feel didn't need any more color. gotta admit i was kind of disappointed when i heard it on backspacer and how much more was added to it.

overall though, great song anyway...and it's not like i'm skipping past it, or any of the songs for that matter. ;)

They scattered the 9 pics on the Backspacer cover around different sites a couple months back. When you found all, the prize was the demo.

Album version by far. Love the piano in it.

  • Full band version is way more listenable to in my opinion - ed's solo version sounds a bit wafty and discordant to me and it's hard to pick up the rhythm at the start.
I can see why some people would prefer the solo version though, perhaps without the keyboards/synthesized elements added.
Great song in any case - how great is this album!

  • I like the demo too but like both versions. They seem very different.

I would love to hear a demo/acoustic version of Just Breathe and The End (without the strings).
