So Social Distortion are opening for 2 of the Philly shows and I decided to check their music out (I have never heard them before). I downloaded a Greatest Hits (I usually try to avoid GH albums) and I liked it, can someone recommend me a really good album to get? Thanks! :)

  • you're going to get alot of differing opinions (old vs. new, etc), but I would recommend their self-titled album. can't beat "ring of fire" and "ball and chain".
he still gives his love, he just gives it away, the love he receives is the love that he'll save...
  • Here's a band who could use the remastering treatment on their albums....I would go with Self Titled, then get Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell.

Listen to their very first album...its a punk classic.....way less polished then there "newer" stuff

When you see them live, focus on the carpet that Mike Ness stands on. He has a policy that if any other band member steps foot on it, they get fined!
  • Yes, the self-titled is a damn good place to start. My favorite is actually their last album, as far as lyrics and the maturity of the music (but avoid the next-to-last album: White Light, White Heat, White Trash - that one kind of blows).

Keep in mind that the self-titled album isn't their first album.

Self Titled, but Live at the Roxy is great as well.

I think White Light, White Heat, White Trash is a pretty good disc. It has one of my favorite Social D. songs in Don't Drag Me Down.

Once you start to get into them, be sure to check out the solo Mike Ness albums. Cheating at Solitare is right up there with the best Social D albums, with a bit more of a outlaw country sound, but still a whole lot of attitude.
"You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.

I've gpt the Greatest hits and white light, white heat , white trash

Both of those are good as well. The GR albums tend to be best for all overviews of sound and feel, imo. That's usually how I start if I don't start from the beginning of the band's catalog.
    PJ: 10/14/00 06/09/03 10/4/09 11/15/13 11/16/13 10/08/14
    EV Solo: 7/11/11 11/12/12 11/13/12
  • Sex, Love, Rock N Roll. that was an amazing piece of work. Highway 101 almost singlehandedly gave me the strength to move on w/ the woman who is now my wife after my ex took off with my daughter. The rest of the album is great too. S/T & White Light are badass also.
Minneapolis 98, Chicago 00, San Fransisco 00, Fargo 03, Thunder Bay 05, St Paul 06 (night 2), Chicago 08 (EV) both nights

    Don't it make you smile?

The greatest hits is the best place to start, then Live at the Roxy.
Some individual tracks that should have been on greatest hits (at least I think so)
    Angels's Wings
Highway 101 (it may have been on there though, can't remember off the top of my head)
    Some I Do
    Before She Begins
    This Time Darlin

They have some gems they play live that should be on their next album like Diamond In The Rough and Bakersfield.
"All I Ever Knew" available now in print and digital formats at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and iBooks.
  • Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell

Great album with a badass albumcover...

Totally the best place to start in my opinion as well. It's a great, straight-forward album.
