I liked it when it was just on the Christmas single, but when it went "public" as part of that charity fundraiser, it got ... well, overplayed, in my opinion. Same thing happened with "Betterman," too.
Now i'm happy if i hear it live -- because i'm seeing them live, and will take whatever they deliver -- but i don't give it much attention otherwise.
This is an old song- I remember it when it was done in a much more Bobby Darin 60's arrangement.
I thought it was overly sappy then & Pearl Jam makes it sound much better than it deserves.
To add insult to injury, not only was I standing within feet of the roof of the sound stage when Eddie stood on it to sing Last Kiss- Gorge '06, but I walk past the " vintage" shop where he originally ran across it whenever I go to the grocery store.
I have learned to chill out about it though, they wouldn't do it if they didn't have fun with it & heaven forfend if they feel they have to ask my approval before they do a cover.
however if they are so inclined as to ask for my approval, I think they should do Cowgirl in the Sand as a Daughter tag

I can't explain it either. I hate this song, but when I first heard it I fell head over heels in love with it.
In fact for want of this Xmas single I joined the Ten Club back in 1998. Had no idea about getting fan club tickets, didn't know about any of the perks of the club, I just had to have this song.
I looooovvvvvvved it.
I learned to play it on guitar, very poorly. My good friend who plays guitar really well would play it for my request and I would sing/cackle the words.
My last experience with it was at San Diego 2006. One of the best shows I've ever seen. Totally loved this set list, the energy of the crowd, the band. It was a special night.
When this song began I was not happy however. Despite the fact that Ed turned around and serenaded the back of the arena and climbed up the staging (all great things). All I could think about was how much I dislike this song.
I've grown to love 85% of PJ's entire catalog, and like the other 13%....... but Last Kiss falls into that ugly 2%.
Sad story and perhaps I'll find the love again, but for now, not a fan.
Ah, it's just too depressing, even for the Pearl Jam crowd. It's got the cadence of a love song, but you can't be romantic with your girl/ guy because it's just a song about death. Imagine holding onto the one you love, and this song comes on the radio, and they start singing it to you??? Guh. Is there a reason you've been reviewing our insurance policies, honey? Just fuckin' creepy.
Plus, for the most part, Pearl Jam lyrics are more metaphorical. Especially when it gets to the heavy stuff like accidentally killing your girlfriend in a car crash. Pearl Jam playing a song written as a literal tragedy? It's like an Emo vying to be Goth. You can't get any sadder.
It's a tie for least favorite song with Thumbing My Way. Ugh. What a self-involved bring down. If ever I could opt for selective amnesia...
Oookay... Mr. Negative decided to show up...

I don't get why a lot of people don't like Thumbing My Way??, I love that song

My guess.
If 'Last Kiss' wasn't a surprize radio hit... and they never played it at the gigs...
...
There would be post about how they should play it and signs with 'Last Kiss' written across it.
...
It was a B-Side/Christmas Single that is usually 'Ours', not the masses. Once it crossed that bridge into the public realm... it was no longer ours.
...
Personally... I like it. I like the nerdy hand clapping and the geeky, 'Hold me darlin', for a little while' screaming at the gigs. It's fun... because i'm a geeky nerd.
...
But... i could be wrong.

I liked Last Kiss when it was a live B side to a Christmas single, or was it the A side? I saw Pearl Jam six times in '06 and every time they played it I cringed. Even when Ed sang it right in front of us on the floor of the bill graham civic center. "Wow Ed is right there, cool... god I hate this song".

So you liked it depending upon where it was released? Or what side it was on?
Hate to be this petty, but yeah, too much air play. It was cool when it first came out, but then when it became the ONLY fucking Pearl Jam song that all the mainstream unimaginative stations out there played for about 2 years, I was really over it. You can only have someone feed you the same thing so many times until you want to spit it out!
Now I've nicknamed it "Fast Piss", because if I hear that during a show I get up and run to the bathroom! I refuse to leave for Even Flow because even though I feel similar sentiment for that song, it always has a bad ass McCready solo in it and I have to stay for that.
I won't change direction, and I won't change my mind - E.V.

Don't you do it, too.

I'm sure that's exactly what they were going for. It's a tribute to a good song. Don't over think it.
