I love Pearl Jam but, they are just resting on their laurels now and haven't challenged themselves or their fans in some time.

I see no need for a change - they are absolutely perfect the way they are & have been for the past 18 years:)

And as far as fans, from what I have seen over the years, their fanbase just keeps growing - so why change now???

Well, they're working on new material, and who knows what that will be like.

Their second most recent album is widely regarded as one of their most experimental.

Ed recently completed his very first solo solo tour, in support of a folksy soundtrack (also a first for him).

Stone has been dabbling in country music, and a Prince cover.

Jeff recently released his first solo album with original material.

Mike and Matt both have side projects, in which they've been working with different musicians.

So my question is, where exactly are you seeing these unchallanged, resting laurels?

PJ have gone too far with focusing on their live stuff...bootlegs of everything, live DVD after live DVD, tours every few months...its awesome that they are a great live band, but that much attention to the live side of things does a couple of things...it takes you away from writing material and writing albums, which is what tours should be based around......

Ya I mean people are entitled to their own opinions but that may be the worst post in the history of this board... Give me a break.. Start with everything that is listed above... then lets move to their shows... They just brought back and started opening with hard to imagine... they brought back WMA and Who You Are for the first time in over 10 years not too mention they are PLaying Love Reign O'er Me now which is not easy by any means... The Fans have been challenged by the band and WE live up to the expectations... the fans have been great at the shows with the singing and the clapping and whatever else... THey are all have side projects... Ed just kicked ass on a solo tour where he did a bunch of different things... Didnt know playing rockin in a free world solo with a guy on drums is FOLKSY...

Cmon man, give me a break... If Pearl Jam doesnt challenge themselves or their fans please humor mean and name a band that you think does?

I disagree- some of their best shows I saw were in 2004, 2005, and 2008 when they were not touring to support and albulm and they played whetever they felt like playing.

LIVE MUSIC... Music is meant to be LIVE... how can you go to far with that? They have completely revolutionized the art of the BOOTLEG... and they have probably the most LOYAL fan base of any band that is around right now... Ya... big mistake there... those 3 hr shows they play really are bland and boring... how dare they play dirty frank for the first time in 12 years...

Maybe they should be like Metallica and on their next new album only learn how to play half the songs on it and play 2 nights at MSG and just do the same exact show both nights... Thats a real challenge

Right... what a waste it was to go to the last 8 shows of the 03 tour just to see them play one of their greatest shows ever at MSG ( oh... no wait, they made one of those shitty dvds from that show) haha... and watch them play 95 different songs in 3 shows in Boston, oh ya, and an Acoustic show an hr before the opening band... Man... that is so lame and boring... every band does that...

yeah, i somewhat agree. i would love for them to release a "vitalogy" or "yield" every 5 years, but it's not going to happen.
but i think the band has been challenged by other things, instead of themselves, that has been influencing their style of music. i wouldn't say they are resting, i would say they are answering.

I totally agree, no need tour ONLY to support a new album. It was great to see some older stuff like WMA and Who You are brought back to life as mentioned above.

you are flat out wrong here. when band perform live, very often new songs are developed on stage. entire albums have been written on the road touring. often new songs are first played live before ever being polished up in the studio....music is MEANT to be played live.

PJ are my favorite band specifically because of their live performances. It is great to follow a band that loves to perform. I listen to the studio albums almost never. I listen to bootlegs, watch DVDs, and see them at shows. I'm just happy they write new material. I buy the studio stuff, but those songs only come to life for me once I see / hear them performed.

You see the live stuff as a distraction for what you want them to be doing in the studio. I see the live stuff as the goal, with the studio work there to provide more options for a great setlist.

Just wanted to clarify here. I didn't mean that the solo shows were exclusively "folksy", but the "Into The Wild" soundtrack had a predominantly folk-feel to it. And there's nothing wrong with that... I loved the soundtrack.

I kind of agree with the original poster. They still make good music but their most recent album was pretty by-the-numbers Pearl Jam. Not exciting or interesting or fresh (IMO).

Yeah, solo projects and live shows are all well and good but what's the point in that if it isn't translated to the studio?
