This is pure magic. The flattened tone in Eddie's vocals.
The sweet, sweet baseline laid down by Jeff.

Oh my. This entire record is a musical masterpiece. Listen with headphones. The layers are fascinating.
Vocals and lyrics are top notch as usual, but the musical arrangements are stunning.

  • only problem with Just Breathe, i can't see it really fitting in a live setting
  • The musical arrangement during the part that begins with "Did say that I need you" is stunning. I think this song may have finally made my girl a fan after 5 years of attempted brainwashing on my part.

    maybe a pre-opening band song?

Sometimes our folk hero comes out after the first encore break with nothing else but his ole gee-tar and plays us a tune. I reckon he may play us Just Breathe in that manner.

  • this is the one song from the first listen that i truly like. i apparently am in the minority, but somehow i am just not feelin' backspacer....yet. however, just breathe...i get. it seems to me that it might be an into the wild outtake. i really, really want to love this album...everyone keeps telling me i'll love it, and thus far i just....don't. i don't "hear" what other people are hearibng, icertainly don't hear the musical influences they hear. i actually hear a lot of ramones, and for the record, i am not a ramones fan. i 'enjoy' most of the musical arrangements, i am just not feelin' the lyrics, and not the delivery. i am not yet enjoying the lyrical delivery of most of the album, at all. just breathe is my one happy exception. man, i hope it the album grows on me. most albums i need to grow on me, but i usually love more to start off.
    Stay with me...
    Let's just breathe...

I am myself like you somehow

I thought about that for a while.... and I've determined that this could actually be a very special song if done live.

If you think about it... when Man of the Hour came out... I never thought of it as a live show type of song.. but Eddie & the Gang incorporated it into the set... usually encore starter.

I think we could see the same thing with Just Breathe

I think this is my favorite Eddie vocal ever recorded on album. The melody, the tone, the heart. And at track 5, it's the heart of an 11 track album, with four songs before it to get your blood pumping, and once you're there, it sets you off into a myriad of joyful songs, until the end, where they leave you heart broken again. Motherfuckers!! :)

It's certainly the most joyful they've sounded. I'm not in the business of comparing it to previous albums. I'm just really glad they made this one.

I really like that last sentiment about the record.

The humming part towards the end is great - I feel like a fetus and Eddies my Ma.

This song was my favorite when the short video (the making of Backspacer) came out. But after hearing it and the other tunes on the CD it goes down to 4th place.

Still a fantastic tune and will be a nice treat at any show.

    Love this song.
The intro guitar work, the bassline, the lyrics.

My immediate favorite off of the new album (I cheated and listened to the album on PJ's myspace).

    Very good tune!

My wife says it sounds like a Lullabye
I say it sounds like a song that you would hear in a great Western movie where the hero cowboy is slowly trotting along on his amazing horse. Bum..Bumbum..bum..bumbum
    That is stunning bass.
It is a extremely well laid out song that I am just discovering new layers to at each listen.

BTW - these are the threads that mean the most of this discussion board. Sure, people want to talk about things they love or hate, but I am loving the passion and thought that people put into each song, or lyric, or note or subtlety.
