First impression of Backspacer vs Some previous albums

Backspacer pretty much rocked my socks right off the bat. There weren't any moments on my first listen where I was left thinking "WTF was THAT?" (Well, okay, maybe when the drums kicked in in Speed of Sound.) Overall, it was a very smooth first listen, and incredibly accessible.
Binaural took a few listens before I started liking it.
Riot Act excited me tremendously but was very "challenging." I remember not being able to remember the tunes of any of the songs until I had listened to the album many times. (Maybe that was a sign that the album wasn't very.. uh... tuneful.)
Avocado was WAY unlike what I was expecting. The WHOLE album got a sort of (delighted) deer in the headlights type stare from me for about the first 5 run-throughs. But I dug it.
Backspacer, on the other hand, I could keep pace with really well, and after only two spins I swear I can hum the tune of every single song, which is pretty impressive. I'm not sure I've every been ablee to do that wwith another PJ album, which I suppose signals that this record is really bloody catchy.
Also, no songs I *hate* on the first listen. Binaural had Thin Air. Riot Act had Green Disease. Avocado... well... didn't hate any of those, although Parachutes has never been my cuppa tea. Backspacer I like. Bodes well, I hope.

3 Decibels Doubles the Volume
2006
Hah! Yeah. I'm not one to judge a song by the title alone, but my initial look at the tracklisting didn't exactly leave me very excited. Who knew that my favorite (so far) songs off of the album would be ones called "Unthought Known" and "Amongst The Waves." ("Amongst" has to be the most awkward rock-music lyric in existence. The fact that Ed could bbuild such a poetic song around the word is a testament to his supreme talent.)
Every other album I have had to work at.....this one just picks up and goes...........its different and im not sure how to feel about it. Like I want to work at it, but the songs are just all good - so who cares?
My task is to work through the lyrics. Some of Ed's best since No Code/Yield/Binaural days. The music I am already there with. I think the lyrics are what are going to keep me coming back. The album is so accessible that I worry it would otherwise get dull quickly -- Either that or I'll be humming the tunes for years.
umm...how about: "the aforementioned verse"?
I love this album, I am blown away. Anyone have any thoughts about all the death/mortality in the lyrics? being the same age as EV, I am little concerned, I mean, I was counting on at least a few more good years before I have to think about that, right?
Also, does anyone else hear much more of a punk/80's/Ramones vibe going on, esp. in Johnny Guitar, Got Some, Supersonic?

Jeez. I am 26 and I think about that stuff all the time. I'm right there with Ed on this one. Maybe I'm just morbid.
There are deeper musings on mortality than perhaps any other PJ album, bu the look at it seems to be ever hopeful, unlike, say, Binaural. (Soon Forget, Sleight of Hand...)
I think Amongst Kicks Aforementioned's ass in awkwardness any day. (Although that line has always bothered me. Improper use of the word and all.)
