Links between songs on Backspacer

Maybe I am reading into the lyrics too much, but has anyone notice a lot of repeated images on backspacer on different songs...for example...

1. last line of speed of sound is "faster that the speed of sound" = supersonic

2. first line of the end is "what were all those dreams we shared"..dreams mentioned in Johnny Gutiar, speed of sound ("And yet I am still holding tight to this Dream of distant light"), unknown thought ("Dream the dreams of other men, You'll be no one's rival, Dream the dreams of others then, You will be no one's rival"); Supersonic ("Yeah I been dreaming of getting along –Now I’m awake, dreaming keep it on keeping on")

3.Got some ....Unknown thought ("Every time I get me some it gets the best of me" )

4. Just breathe ..song about dying..(the end seems about dying as well, both mention being "just a human being"), also Amongst the waves ("Where I can feel like I've Put away my early grave")

5. Also a lot of uses of darkness, dawn, and light....unknown thought (Feel the sky blanket you With gems and rhinestones!!! See the path cut by the moon For you to walk on", "Fill the air up with love
All black with starlight" ; the fixer ("When somethin's dark, let me shed a little light on it") Amongst the waves ("I can see the light Coming through the clouds in rays") Speed of sound ("But this night has been a long one
waiting on a sun That just don’t come") Force of Nature (eyes above the horizon in the dark before the dawn)

There are others but I would like to see if anyone else sees any. Truely an album in the classic sense and not just a collection of songs.
thougts?

I noticed, but haven't decided whether it's good or bad, repetitive or thematic. I love some of the lines on their own, but like you pointed out, some are very similar.
  • I don't see Just Breathe as a song about dying...

I see it more of a song about coming to terms with the fact that yeah we will eventually die and go through bad times but while we're here let's "just breathe" and be together.
  • Yeah I guess the Just breathe last 2 lines of "Hold me til I die, Meet you on the other side" just made me think that its more of a song about death sooner rather than later
  • I think you're on to something about the dreams. Tom Tomorrow mentioned in an interview about the artwork that some images are from the band members dreams or something like that.
  • I see a strong connection between Speed of Sound and The End.

Both start out yearning/thinking about the past:
SOS: Yesterdays, how quick they change all lost and long gone now.
TE: What were all those dreams we shared those many years ago?

and both lead up to a whisper:
SOS: A whisper in the dark is that you or just my thoughts?
TE: Before I disappear, whisper in my ear...

    and the narrator seemingly dying:
SOS: It's gone so quiet now Could it be I'm farther out? Moving faster than the speed of sound.
TE: My dear, the end, comes near, I'm here, but not much longer.

here somewhere on the another thread- where Eddie's interviewed by Brad Wheeler talkin about each song- good read- there isn't talk about death in Ed's description of each song and how why it was written
Just Breathe he says in the interview " Just stop and be together and feel each others presence."

Gonna See My Friend is about kicking a smoking habit, and The End appears to be about dying of cancer.

  • maybe the smoking habit caused the cancer...circle of life
  • Has anyone noticed that the song The End is at the end. WOW! I kill me

Yeah, that's how I interpreted the song. That's what's great about Pearl Jam. We can all sit here and talk online about songs through a 20 year career and still have different interpretations about a song.
