I don't know about you guys but I hear Ed doing Caleb, of KOL that is... One of the greatest, fresh, sexy songs on Backspacer! :D

I love this album, but I really love how fresh they sound and how they had their openers rubb off on them, not only their icons.

I don't really get the KOL connection either. It doesn't sound particularly twangy to me.

That's funny you mention it - I did think of Caleb about the 3rd time I heard JG! The croak in "Now Johnny he be having lots of women, The reason he be smiling known to him" certainly has that element to it. This album is one of my absolute favourites already - I seriously can't stop listening to it, and for the first time in years I'm looking most forward to hearing the new stuff at the upcoming tour!

wait...are you guys really comparing Ed to the terrible singer from Kings of Leon!?? say it isn't so!:cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry:

I don't think it's necessarily the whole song or even the whole band at that point in the song, but I think the only bit I can pick up is Ed's voice in that one particular moment where he snarls deliberately atonally: "Now Johnny he be having lots of women, The reason he be smiling known to him" and the corresponding sections later. I'd say "homage" is used loosely here, and I'm sure Ed, Matt and Stone weren't thinking of Kings of Leon when they wrote it, but the fact that I independently thought the same thing as a few others here means there's obviously somthing that sparked a comparison. Shoot me down, but I actually love both bands, although PJ is like the wife to my KOL summer fling in significance!

Yeah it was about the third time for me too but I couldn't put my finger on it until now. I love it!
If I had known then what I know now...
  • Who is Kings of Leon and why are you making these awful jokes?

I don't get KOL at all and never understood why people are crazy about them. That lead singer's voice is just soo fucking disgusting to me. On a side note I heard the other day that Justin Timberlake is remixing their album or something soon? Made me lol

Ouch - is that for real or a joke? Have liked a bit of JT as well in the past - at least his SNL comedic stuff (eg Dick in a Box) - but the combination doesn't ring too sweetly does it!
I certainly wouldn't call myself crazy about KOL, but I thought last PJ tour when I saw them first time they were a great support act. Good to see a band consisting of brothers and a cousin making it big (in UK and Australia at least - if I'm correct, they never really caught on back there in US?). It's tempting when a band cracks the popular music scene to cast them aside - who'd be seen dead calling themselves a fan of a band who's albums are selling as well as some of the top RNB acts? Lead singer's voice is rough around the edges, but same could be said about our beloved EV's at times.
Saying all of that, there is only one band that has my unconditional and undying love and that is Pearl Jam.

  • Mark Knopfler maybe, not KOL.
  • KOL and PJ are my favorite bands. I've literally been listening to both of them nonstop for the past 5 years. If you haven't been exposed to KOL listen to their first 3 records. Brilliant work. As for Johny Guitar and Caleb, i see it somewhat...but it's a stretch.
