It's cool that this album is finally arriving after 3 years, 4 months and 18 days since Avocado. I haven't heard it yet as a whole, but do you think it'll still be that good a few years from now, when Pearl Jam is back in the studio for album #10? I sure hope so. Do you think we'll be saying "This new album's going to kick Backspacer's ass!" The same way we're saying "Backspacer's way better than S/T."

    this.
  • I think Backspacer will definately stand up the way it does right now 2 years from now. Its a more cleaner sound, the band sounds waaay better than they did on Avocado... hell even Riot Act. They are back to the old forumla of Ed writing all the lyrics. It will hold up just fine..

I dont see "cleaner" as a better thing. I like the more unfinished, distortion stuff better. Not to say I dont like Backspacer. I have come to accept all the piano/strings/horns, but I still like Avacado better.

I'm looking @ cleaner from a production standpoint, meaning, not sloppy production.

Where's Dr Who when you need him (Pertwee or Barker of course).
  • It took me about two years to realize how great Yield truly was. There's always a bit of disappointment with a new album only because our expectations are often so ridiculously high. Once you just relax and enjoy rather than over analyze you get a far picture of how good something is (or isn't).
    So this life is sacrifice...

I think the difference is Brendan O'Brien. I think self titled was am amazing record, but for the first time since Matt joined the band his drum sound has actually been truly "captured."

I absolutely agree with this. Brendan's influence is one of the big differences between these past two records. Imagine if he could have produced Avocado... I think it would have sounded so much better. I really like Avocado as it is, but I think his influence would have been huge. Matt does sound incredible on this album, which is great. He was one of the weaker points on the last album (in terms of his sound). I think another major difference is Ed and his voice. He just sounds much better on Backspacer than he did on Avocado. It's almost a shame he can't go back in time and re-record the vocals for that album. He seemed like he was stretching himself too much, almost as if he needed more time to get comfortable with the vocal lines before recording. His voice seems to be in top notch shape right now however.
