What impact does this album have on you?

For me, Avocado was more immediate. I had been so stressed out by the war and just felt like listening to it for the first time was like catharsis. I was that line "she can feel the war on her face". With Backspacer, its a jarring listen but less immediate. Backspacer is less frantic and urgent and angry.
Backspacer, seems to me to be about trying to deal with the world, just accepting maybe the world as it is, as messed up as it is, and just trying to live life in the face of it. That "there are some things that can make me hurt but others that make me believe" bad transcription obviously but the meaning is the same.
I had a lump in my throat by the end of Avocado, because I identified with it so much.
This is a great album, but I just dont know...

The content or meaning of the album as a whole isn't as obvious with Backspacer as it was w/ the S/T record. I like that it takes more than one listen to decipher what a song is about as opposed to reading a song title and going ok, that's going to be about war (WWS comes to mind)... but that means it may warrant a few more listens for some people to get into the album.
Myself, I do like that the politics are a lot more subtle on this record... I also think the music itself sounds a lot more fresh, with Avocado, aside from the production value everyone complains about, I felt the album was stale in a few spots and kind of boring... Not saying I don't enjoy that album, I do, but Backspacer hits me like a ton of bricks, it's just so refreshing...
For a band to put out this quality of music on their 9th album is astounding.
