Got Some album vs. live

I find this is one of the rare PJ songs that sounds worse live. I think it has to do with the fact that it is REALLY hard to sing.

Thoughts?

I liked it on Conan, but the album recording is phenomenal.
"They said ... timing was everything
made him ... want to be everywhere
there's a ... lot to be said for nowhere."
  • It's because Ed is doing a very tight 3-part harmony on the recording. It's subtle but quite powerful. He and Matt cant tackle stuff that tough on stage.

  • I find it very much like Hail Hail, when I first caught that on Lettermen I wasn't impressed.

But with time it grew on me.

I LOVE Got Some, but agree the Conan version was strained, but I have a feeling hear it live will be great.
  • hmm, i don't know man, it was pretty rockin live. i haven't heard the actual album version yet, so I can't compare. but if it's better than live, i'll be wacking all over myself.
  • I think it's one of the better songs on the Album.

I prefer Mike's solo at the end on Conan version.

    And the live version rocks!

The studio version rocks too. Kinda punches ya in the face to start. Might have been interesting to put a count-in at the start but whatever.

  • one question i have is - on the conan version - ed i think has a chest cold or something. i think he actually clears his throat at one point near the beginning of the song. or is that an intended part of the album version?
  • When I first heard the album version of Got Some I was absolutely blown away, I thought it was a great song. And the first few times i heard it i heard various live versions (Conan, London, Chicago) I didn't really think that highly of it. So it does seem that the live version is lacking something and I have been trying to figure out what it is too. The vocals could be what the problem is, it also seems to me that the live they seem to be rushing it a little bit. Im still not sure what it is but I have to agree that the studio take is much better than the live versions we have heard, my guess is theyll get better though.

yeah, so true, this is not the usual "live version is better" pattern: I think the studio version is very well produced because you can notice more fine details :!: behind the loud rockin parts and Eddie's vocals are close to pure perfection, really. Now it's one of my biggest favourite on Backspacer!!! 8-)

Gotta agree. The album version sounds better than what I heard in Chicago and definitely better than the Conan version. This is a tough one to sing live.

I love the Hail, Hail analogy. Some songs sound better on the album than live. Other examples: Porch(the energy isn't there anymore live), Who you are and...I can't think of anymore right now
  • I totally agree with the Hail, Hail analogy as well. When I heard this on Conan, I was very disappointed. I actually watched it several times hoping it would grow on me, but it never did. But, when I heard the album version for the first time today, I was completely blown away, just like when I first listened to the album version of Hail, Hail. Got Some is my favorite on Backspacer so far after day 1 of listening.

well it depends on how far Ed is into the bottle of wine...if he's toward the end of the bottle and they try this song he will BOTCH these lyrics lol.

Yes, that is intended......its on the album........and its badass

I have to say I got used to the grit of the Conan performance, but the album version is much cleaner. i love both though.......
