Sad and Hard to Imagine

OK, I just really "discovered" the greatness that is SAD. the lyrics that really caught my attention -
he lit a match, he laid in bed
hoping their dreams will bring her back, it's sad
and his loneliness is cruel, it's sad
he could only love you, it's sad
holding his last breath, believing
he'll make his way
if she's not forgotten
he's haunted
he's searching for escape
so this subject burned himself to death in a fire, just like in hard to imagine. "light your pillow, lay back, watch the flames"
interesting that eddie has used this more than once.

Its kinda similar to the lines in Alone about the shower/his thoughts burning him, and pulling his knees to his face. So i always interpreted Sad in a similar way, ie that the bed is a place for him to wallow in his feelings...i like this angle on it though.
yeah, i see that now too, but man it sounds like he says "he lit a match" which makes sense with the next verse beginning
"Holding his last breath"
As in, he lit this fire to burn himself to death, and he's holding onto that last breath before he gets to see her again in the afterlife.
Sad was the first song in many years I sat and listened to over and over to get lyrics for.
Love em love em
but i was listening to my free download of the Grand Rapids show and eddie quite clearly says "11 nights he laid in bed" Clear as can be. Maybe he switches the lyrics up sometimes like YL?
The riff is amazing. The live version is, in my opinion, better than the studio version only because the tempo is picked up just a notch. It's perfection.
I discovered it after my "person", my very best friend and soulmate in this world died unexpectedly. All I wanted to do was join her. I couldnt breathe, I was "sad" - which is part of the message, your not just SAD - its enveloping, sad is just such a petty word for the devastation, the loneliness of losing someone so close to you that life without this person is unfathomable. I had to be very careful if it came on when I was driving, it made me cry and grit- your- teeth angry at the same time, and I cannot tell you the number of times i drove in an angry haze of self destruction. However, it was also a catalyst for healing, as it allowed me to experience my grief, and get it out, exhale.
I'm better now, the wave has crested. I wanted to have the lyrics inscribed on her grave, but I still cant bring myself to visit her . Maybe in a few years.
