Female Opera Singers?

If you ever watched A Room of One's Own the starting music is opera sung by a female singer. Also, within Life is Beautiful there is an opera scene, and 2 female singers are singing. I would like to hear more, but I don't know where to start. I saw a little of a tv program last night that included a female opera singer, but the song seemed more sung word than sung song. Any suggestions?

Also, any suggestions for cello? I have a Yo-Yo Ma CD, any others you would suggest? Or flamenco guitar?

    My daughter, who seems to be leaning toward singing opera, looks up to Renee Fleming. My father also liked her.
