New CD Day
I don't think there is much better than 'new CD day'. Downloading music can not replace the ritual of buying the actual CD (or LP).
Step 1 - Go to your locally owned record store.
Step 2 - Purchase the CD.
Step 3 - Open the CD and play it in your car on the way home. I prefer to skim the album and go quickly through all of the songs to get the general feel.
Step 4 - Playing the CD on your home system with the volume turned WAY up so you can hear EVERYTHING!
Step 5 - Rip open the case and booklets and find all of the cool shit that they put in there this time.
Step 6 - Absorbe!
Step 7 - Repeat steps 4-6 over and over again.
Happy New CD Day!!!!

Sorry, just a pet peeve of mine.
I fall somewhere in the middle. Obviously the music is the most important part, but the ritual is very important to me. How I listen to an album for the first time can really determine how I'm going to feel about it for a long time. I know that's not how it should be, but it just is. For instance, feeling rushed when I listen to an album is never a good thing. Also, listening to it with other people is usually a bad thing for my mojo, especially if its a PJ album. For whatever reason I find myself thinking about how much I hope they like what they hear rather than simply absorbing the music for me. Of course just when I say that, I'm going to forced to break that rule today when I have to hear Backspacer for the first time while driving up to Philly with my roommate.
