So...

I think I've read about 6 or 7 reviews from some fairly reputable journalists and music types... who all say the new album is influenced by pop and New Wave.

I may or may not have heard the album yet. :o But based on what I've heard... I don't hear or sense any pop or new wave influence at all. Anyone agree or disagree?

I guess what I always associated with the term New Wave must not be what other people do, because I still haven't felt like I was getting a new wave thing going on.
words seem so out of place.

  • I hear it in a few songs, but I'm also hearing Zep, Deep Purple, Thin Lizzy and earlier era PJ.

I suppose you could say that there are some new wave overtones.. perhaps in small parts in a very small amount of songs...

I just think it's misleading to say that "Backspacer" is influenced by New Wave and pop....

especially the pop part. It's a great ROCK album.

ooooooooooooo....liking the sounbd of that! given that the 80s, and thus new wave music was *the* music of my youth, sounds great! i often refer to the police as "the pearl jam of my youth" to illustrate just how big a police fan i was back in the day.

High School we were listening to:

Police, Dire Straits, AC/DC, The Angels, U2, Queen, Bowie, Hoodoo Gurus, Springsteen, Cars, Huey Lewis, Cold Chisel, Skyhooks, Smiths, The Cure, Elivs Costello, Split Enz/Crowded House, Thin Lizzy, Zep, Purple, Sex Pistols, Clash.

Not saying PJ were influenced by the above but I can hear bits and pieces of the style all the above bands in some songs on this and the previous album - in a good way - no, no, in a great way! I

I'm so happy I never got into Flock of Seagulls, Tears For Fears or Bananarama!!! :o

while I have yet to read a review that states as much
there is definitely an 80s undertone to the record

    I totally disagree
this is the least rocking record they have made IMHO
synth, violins and piano backing tracks-there is your 80s/pop/new wave influence
And most notably-a clear lack of McCready ROCK solos on the record
  • After the opening guitar assault that opens Supersonic, there is a quiter section that leads into the first line fo the song...

First time I heard it, I thought, 'ahh, The Cars. Shake It Up. Nice.'

And I agree that the keyboard parts add to this vibe throughout the album.

Hell, the lyrics on "Johnny Guitar" are really just an update of J. Geil's Band's "Centerfold" !
There's a lot to be said for nowhere...
  • It is definitely a pop record or at least the most pop record pj have made. The problem with the new wave comment is that New Wave is a wide and disperate collection of sounds, much like the term grunge.
