Its been asked before, but what do you think?

With a Sunday release date I'm not sure what week they will be lumped into and who will be their main competition.......only one I can see is Jay-Z, but his sales should taper off by the time Backspacer hits.

Self-Titled sold something like 279,000 in its first week, but only got to #2.

This album is getting better reviews, so it may do better...........but then again its only available at Target.
Also, Self-Titled had WWS at #1, and BS only has The fixer at #2.

Hater disclaimer: Its not really a huge deal or measuring stick for the quality, but it would be nice bragging rights.

Actually it was Tool who beat them out. I think they sold twice as much as PJ in the first week.

I hope so! I don't see it happening with the limited places it's available, however, Jay-Z should be slowing down a bit by then and I don't think there's anything too big coming out the same week so who knows?
  • I will be absolutely amazed (and delighted) if this album sells more than 160k in the first week (at least as far as Soundscan tracks things. It's not so much that the sales are limited to Target (mostly) -- Promotion of this record when compared to Avocado has been pretty minimal. (Although I will say that awareness seems to be out there regardless. A lot of non-fans have mentioned the record in my presence.)

Of course, I'd love to see PJ top the charts and sell a million records once again, but I just don't see it happening, regardless of how good the album is. Not even Kings of Leon sell a million. Album sales don't seem to be the barometer for success that they once were.
  • Does the 10c issue of Backspacer count into total sales for the week?

My $$ says no but I would love to see Pearl jam with a #1 record. It's been a while since that happened.
He who forgets will be destined to remember.

I could be wrong but I don't think that the 10c version, or copies sold through indie shops (which I believe don't use soundscan) will count towards the numbers. Will the RIAA track all of the stuff that "Monkeywrench Records" ships? I'm not sure how they handle independent releases.

As far as US sales, self titled hit somewhere in the 700,000s. I read somewhere that it was over a million worldwide.

I think so, I remember reading that they had the super deluxe preorders counted for the Ten reissue.

Well, yeah. I meant 1 million in the US.
  • Well, its at #20 right now overall on itunes and that is solely from pre-orders. I would imagine that number jumps up once the album is actually available for download.

Only by the Night did it a million...which is sad because Kings will probably try to recreate what they did on that album and thus continue to suck.
  • Top 5 is probably a realistic expectation. Because it's a Target exclusive. At worst #5...at best #1 obviously.

Ahhhh yes. That was the roughest week I've ever had when my two favorite bands released an album at the same time! It was hard enough that it took Tool 5 YEARS for a follow-up, so I will admit that my cravings were a bit lopsided. Just a tad!
