“The Most Dangerous Man in America”: New Documentary Chronicles Story of Daniel Ellsberg, Whose Leak of the Pentagon Papers Helped End Vietnam War"

This is an incredible story of bravery against all odds and to be facing life in jail for treason is astounding what he felt was the right thing to do for the country. He wanted to and did save THOUSANDS of lives that were set to go to war. It tells the story of how this country lied to it's citizens to prolong an unwinable war in Vietnam. I hope it will be shown here in DC, atleast Daniel Ellsberg wants it to.
AMY GOODMAN: Our next guest was described by Henry Kissinger as “the most dangerous man in America.” He once faced espionage charges and possibly life in prison. The Nixon administration made attempts to ruin his life, going so far as to break into his psychiatrist’s office with the hope of uncovering incriminating information. Yes, I’m speaking about Daniel Ellsberg, the former Pentagon analyst who leaked to the press in 1971 what became known as the Pentagon Papers, a 7,000-page classified history outlining the true extent of US involvement in Vietnam.

Daniel Ellsberg’s actions directly contributed to the end of the Nixon presidency and the Vietnam War. His story is chronicled in a new documentary called The Most Dangerous Man in America: Daniel Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers. It opens today in New York at the Film Forum.

DANIEL ELLSBERG: It was the evening of October 1st, 1969, when I first smuggled several hundred pages of top-secret documents out of my safe at the RAND Corporation. The study contained forty-seven volumes, 7,000 pages. My plan was to Xerox the study and reveal the secret history of the Vietnam War to the American people.

UNIDENTIFIED: The FBI was trying to find out who gave the New York Times a copy of a Pentagon secret study.

UNIDENTIFIED: Pow!, like a thunderclap, you get the New York Times publishing the Pentagon Papers, and the country is panicking.

HENRY KISSINGER: This is an attack on the whole integrity of government. If whole file cabinets can be stolen and then made available to the press, you can’t have orderly government anymore.

HEDRICK SMITH: I mean, it was just staggering. The raw, top-secret, eyes-only documents.

PRESIDENT RICHARD NIXON: I think it is time in this country to quit making national heroes out of those who steal secrets and publish them in the newspaper.

PATRICIA ELLSBERG: In the first year of marriage, we’re talking about him going to prison for the rest of his life.

REPORTER: Dr. Ellsberg, do you have any concern about the possibility of going to prison for this?

DANIEL ELLSBERG: Wouldn’t you go to prison to help end this war?

UNIDENTIFIED: We felt so strongly that we were dealing with a national security crisis. Henry Kissinger said that Dr. Daniel Ellsberg was “the most dangerous man in America” and he had to be stopped.

I'm listening to the Democracy Now!' interview right now.

I look forward to seeing the doc. I remember Daniel Elsberg from the Vietnam documentary 'Hearts and Minds'.

I know. It's incredible how willing some people are to be conned.

There's a part in this documentary where you hear a taped conversation between Nixon and Kissinger where Nxon's trying to persuade Kissinger to drop nukes on Vietnam. He tells Kissinger of the need to 'think big', e.t.c, but Kissinger would have none of it.

And it's twisted scumbags like Nixon that some people will bend over backwards to protect. He was no better than Himmler - just a businessman in his office calmly discussing wiping out the lives of a few million people. Reagan was no better. If the Neuremberg laws had been applied to these people they all would have been hanged.

if the nuremberg laws applied to EVERYBODY it would be a good thing. unfortunately the nuremberg laws will never be applied to a superpower. only people like charles taylor and other warlords in places like africa. the leaders of the us and other powers will never ever be held accountable to anyone for anything. and we along with our allies are the ones committing the atrocities on a large scale...sad sad world we live in here..
