Not a good area? Said it was a mile from venue. We had planned on walking to and from.

Just because it's a mile away doesn't necessarily mean you can walk there. It's in the airport area which is surrounded by highways and industrial areas and swamps. Just stay in Center City. That way you'll enjoy the city more as well. And who knows - PJ usually stays at the Loews Hotel or Sofitel in the city. Ya never know...

Phiily has a very good and easy public transportation system http://www.septa.org
As a local,I would have to agree, do not stay by the airport. It is a terrible part of the city and would be a dangerous walk to the Spectrum. Best of luck :D:D

Well, I ended up at the airport too because a comparable hotel was about 5 times the cost in Center City, even on Priceline. So I just could not justify that. I'll just take a cab to and fro and that's it. Saturday will be the only day I really have time for touristy stuff anyway, but I am really looking forward to that too.

Ended up with the $60 deal for the Renaissance, but hear that is sold out now?

I would not try to walk from the airport to the venue. It is more like 3 miles and all interstate from the looks of it on Google Earth. But I am not from there so I don't know.

Flagg, you're right, it's mostly highways.

There's cabs that wait outside McFaddens at the Ballpark which is right across the street from the Spectrum, or you can check out http://www.septa.org like someone else mentioned.

I just booked Renaissance Philadelphia Hotel Airport today on 10/1/09 for a $60 plus taxes bid.

Anyone who may have been "sold out" before there should try it now. People who book normally with a hotel can cancel, making it available again.

    :D

i'm going to guess that most people staying downtown are going to take the train. no sense in driving and dealing with that hassel. not to mention the drinking situation

Due to the notorious Philly Tailgate, if you're driving, then I would say get there early and be prepared not to get out of the lot for an hour afterwards. I'll be there at 11 am. And a hoagie and drink will be waiting for me afterwards. No reason to rush things.

Since I'll be leaving from work in central Virginia at about 1pm... do I have to be concerned that I'll not make it into the show? I'm going to 10/31 (Saturday) and mapquest says 4.5 hours. So if traffic is moving normally, I should get to philly before 6pm, quick check-in at airport hotel for maybe 30 minutes... then venue a few miles away. Am I way off on my plans?

Nah, you should be fine. Though it could get ugly parking-wise if there's a World Series game. Little tip: There's a park across the street(Broad St.) from the Wachovia Center(next to the Spectrum - can't miss it) called FDR park where people park as well. It might cost like $10, but it's real easy getting parking, then you just need to cross the street. I would make that your emergency choice if things look fucked.

Thanks for the tip! If that's easier in general, I may just plan on going there to begin with. Do you happen to know street-by-street directions from the Renaissance? I'm good at getting lost, and have not been to that area before. :D
