Pearl Jam is going to blow up...

...once Amongst The Waves hits the airwaves!! I didn't think any song would be able to replace the love that I have for Given To Fly, but ATW is quickly changing my thought process that's for sure!
This has to be the most "accessible" album from the boys that even the most casual of listeners should easily be able to get into it. My prediction is that PJ will have a major resurrgence on the music scene and the fanbase will grow tremedously with this release. I could care less if this happens though, but that is my hunch.

That's certainly true. It gets said almost every record, but I agree with the OP. I think this one really has potential to bring in new fans. My friends, who've never been into PJ, are enthralled with this record.
Where I'm not ugly and you're lookin' at me
Whether its a hit on radio or not is pointless. How many people do you know thesedays, who, number one, listen to the radio, and two, hears about new bands via the radio. Most everyone I know hears about music through word of mouth or via music blogs like Pitchfork or Stereogum. Or through soundtracks of tv shows, a great song is used to soundtrack the ending to Greys anatomy or Scrubs and people run to youtube or whatever to try and find the song.
So the point is, the band has to pick up steam in those areas. Liscence the songs to tv and movies, do some press with indie websites etc...
Having your song being played every hour on the hour on your local alt rock station is no longer a good baromator for how well a band or song is doing

The best we can do is help spread the music ourselves.. I think it will be much easier to get friends into Backspacer than any of their other albums. It's damn catchy.
Pearl Jam should stream the album from their homepage, myspace and so on.. It's more about getting the music out than how many albums sell. The industry is not what it was ten years ago.
And you will never find a post from me making those statements. This is the first time I've made this proclamation for a new release of theirs and I'm standing behind it.

Yes amongst the waves is good but The fixer, got some and supersonic are the highlights. With that said draw your own conclusion....but speed of sound is def better now.

By blowing up, you have to define what that means in 2009.
Even for bands that get massive amounts of hype and press like Vampire Weekend or Arcade Fire, are those two bands really "Big"? They are definitely two of the most talked about bands in the blogosphere and the indie rock world, but does that translate into "blowing up"?
I kind of think along the lines of this, its sort of hard for any band these days to be "huge", as things are so fractured. You have access to literally every album ever created free via illegal downloading. Everyone, and anyone, even non credentialed people can create a blog, or make a myspace. And every band can post songs on myspace and youtube. There are SO many ways to expose your music, it sort of in many ways nullifies every band.
And in the past you could quantify a bands popularity. How many albums this or that band sold. How popular a video was. How many copies of Rolling Stone mag with their face sold. How many times people requested a song by so and so to play on the radio.
These days its impossible to do that. We can say "this band sold 2 million albums" but we have no way of telling how many millions downloaded an album for free online.
Hey! What do you mean, "you people"?

Like Ed said, the past few albums have had some more complicated songs that you "need a special skeleton key to figure out". Everyone thought Severed hand would be good, but that took me a few dozen listens before my mind put everything together. Casual radio listeners are not that patient.
Every song on Backspacer sounds like a single, with the exception of "The End". They are simple, upbeat and catchy. Ed is really belting out the lyrics. He finally stopped mumbling and doesn't sound tired.. It's a happy and optimistic album and thats what most people want.
