B.Corgan to reveal details of new Pumpkins album Sept 16th

it says on www.smashingpumpkins.com that Billy will be announcing details of the new SP album, including the album name. This is interesting, as BC had stated not all that long ago that SP would no longer be releasing proper albums, just digital singles and/or EP's, so I'm looking forward to what he has to say.

Really hope we get a studio version of song for a son. Heard the live versions of some of the new stuff, sounds a million times better than Zeitgeist!

  • here is the exact quote from Billy from April 9,2009:

OK, album plans: first off, I still plan on making an album. I know this may contradict with what I've said publicly, but I think I just didn't state what I meant clearly. I meant I don't think I'm going to make albums in the old-fashioned way, meaning 12-15 songs, etc in one small package. My desire at this point would be to release one song at a time, over a period of 2-3 years, with it all adding up to a box set/album of sorts that would also include an art movie of the album. (Sounds like a lot of work, don't it??) My thinking is that if I focus on one song at a time I would approach them as beautiful, distinct paintings that would each require the attention they deserve. This would also mean I would choose what I am recording quite carefully as there would be tremendous internal pressure to get it just right, and that is the kind of pressure I like, which is to make the most beautiful thing possible. I've gotten lost many times during the long haul of making a record and have overlooked some great songs because of that. The new standard for an SP song would that it be excellent and fantastic and most importantly essential or it's not coming out. I will do my best to meet that intention fully. So soon I will announce (hopefully) that I've begun the process, May being the most likely 'start' date. I will continue on from 'there' until whatever date it all seems finished. That would probably be marked by the release of the final artwork package and the movie. So lots of details to be worked out, as you can see. I plan on the first actual song release coming in September. For the new SP, I don't think I would be interested in a subscription model unless it was something where enough people wanted a daily access to the work (in progress). I guess we as a community could throw out how many people would be interested in that as an idea. It would definitely have to be something that would be worth the effort on all sides.

If you check out an Irish band called Ash (Im sure most people will have heard of them), they're doing the same thing. They're doing an A-Z singles, releasing a single every 2 weeks for over a year and it'' be released as a package at the end. It's a great idea. I'd love Pumpkins to do something similar

Wow. That's one tall order. I know Corgan is a douche sometimes. But he has written some of the greatest songs of all time, so I personally can't wait for this. Some Adore or Machina sounding tunes will be very much appreciated :D

i like a few of their songs, but to honest...his voice has always annoyed me. call me an idiot...but in order for me to really like a band, i have to really like the vocalist's voice. i've always been that way. so, it's safe to say that i'm not a big SP/Corgan fan.

is navarro gonna be involved in the recording process or is he just part of the touring "pumpkins"?

I believe Navarro is only taking part in that side project called Spirit in the Sky or whatever the hell it is.

I've never understood the fascination with the name-changing argument. AIC, Pumpkins, Sepultura, the list goes on and on.. Who cares what he calls it? Will it make the music sound different if it's called The Billy Corgan Project? His solo record was called Billy Corgan, and with good reason. It didn't sound like SP. It was a departure. Same with Zwan. Jimmy was in that group too. Now he's writing pumpkins songs again, so he might as well call it that.

Nothwithstanding all that, I could care less what the name on the cd is, as long as it doesn't suck.

You're missing the point that if he keeps the name, then he can tour will all their old songs.

If he took on a different name, could he do that? Why should he have to drop the SP songs when people still want to hear them?

there is no law that says he can't play SP songs live on tour if he didn't call his new project SP. He just wants to call it SP. So to me that's good enough. He pretty much WAS SP anyway. JC added something, and he left and gave his blessing for Billy to use the name, so to me that even adds to the argument that Billy can do what he wants.

dunno that itll be that systematic... kindof sounds like stuff will just be released as its ready and the mood is right... which is a cool idea after sitting around waiting for a mediocre PJ album for the past 4 years... theres gotta be atleast a dozen good songs out of 44... hopefully more

Cornell plays Soundgarden songs. As long as he has credits for writing it...I think he can play as many Pumpkins songs as he wants...

  • an extract from billy's announcement back in 2005
When I played the final Smashing Pumpkins show on the night of December 2, 2000, I walked off the Metro stage believing that I was forever leaving a place of my life behind. I naively tried to start a new band, but found that my heart wasn't in it. I moved away to pursue a love that I once had but got lost. So I moved back home to heal what was broken in me, and to my surprise I found what I was looking for. I found that my heart is in Chicago, and that my heart is in The Smashing Pumpkins.

For a year now I have walked around with a secret, a secret I chose to keep. But now I want you to be among the first to know what I have made plans to renew and revive The Smashing Pumpkins. I want my band back, and my songs, and my dreams. In this desire I feel I have come home again.

the question really is, is a band more than a name? i think it is? it is the people, as well as the name, as well as the songs.
Band members come and go, it happens, but when 3 or the original 4 members are not there??? i don't know.

There are enough musicians in the world to do 44 Pumpkins songs.........I think anyway. He goes through them like a randy rabbit
