My Dog Killed a Baby Rabbit

:(

Walking my dog early in the morning when it was still dark out. He approaches the electric meters on the side of an apartment nearby. All of the sudden he nabs something and I hear this terrible whining/crying/screaming type of noise.

I tried to yank the leash but Scooter wouldnt let go. He finally lost his grip and I pulled him away. It was a baby rabbit.

The rabbit looked hurt and he moved across to the other side of the roadway, rather slowly, but moving.... that was good. I checked and Scooter had no blood on his beard.

I hope the rabbit lives. It was incredibly sad. I cant get mad at Scooter because he is a Jack Russell terrier and that is what he is supposed to do. He wanted to bring me a rabbit, :(

He was real small. IF I make a fist, he was a little smaller than that.

I hope he is OK. I couldnt check because I had the dog with me. I drove by slowly on my way to work and couldnt see him/her.

the other night i go to let my dog in and he didn't immediately come to the door... so i go out to see what's happening and he runs over to something, picks it up and shakes it violently

    it was a possum

told him to drop it and get inside

in the morning the possum was gone
  • My neighbors dog was on my lawn earlier this spring and came away from the house chewing.

I looked down and to little rabbit feet were hanging out, my stomach turned and told her no, but she just crunched away and swallowed the thing WHOLE.

I almost puked, if I hadn't stopped eating meat 6 years ago I would have that day.

I love my cats, but I hated them when I saw how they toyed with a mouse. I'm vegan (I noticed a few of you are vegetarians) and its a reminder of the way predators and prey live. Natural but not easy to watch.

I agree. Natural behavior of some animals can be a gruesome thing thing to witness, and worse if you're on the prey-side of things. Many animals are evolved as killing machines. I have a cat, dog and parrot at my house. I've told my GF, if your cat kills my bird, I kill the cat. :D

Rabbit ain't too shabby...not as good as buffalo...our alley cat (he came with the house) got a baby rabbit a month or two ago....one morning, I watched him catch a House Finch....and swallow the bird...lock, stock and feathers...crazy. True, except most wild animals usually kill their prey and eat them instantly.. most domesticated animals like to play and slowly chew on the creature to death..

    Is this thread serious??

First of all, the thread title says the rabbit is dead, yet in the post it makes mention of how he saw the rabbit hop away. So which is it?

True....the "play" might be the domesticated animal trying to relive the hunting process that is still part of their genetic code.

    Very good point. Haha.

The rabbit got across the street, but didnt look too strong. You have to figure he was 'running' for his life, but its pace wasnt too quick and looked awkward.

I am assuming he may be done for I guess. I really hope not, I was hoping to hear some reassuring words on that,
  • my dog Jasper killed a cat two months ago, first time ever. The short story is that we have had this cat come into our yard and crap everywhere in the garden, I have seen it once. Well this cat jumped over the fence and into our yard while jasper was there, my fiancee saw this, Jasper pounced on it, shook the hell out of it and broke its back, I took it to the vet and they had to put it down.

While having a glass of wine on a quiet porch at the "mayor's" (village administrator's) house with some neighbors after a funeral, I witnessed one of my neighbors having their finger bitten off from the first knuckle by their chocolate lab.

Where I'm from Rabbits are a pest, and destroy our native vegetation. Introduced by English settlers to hunt. Well these rabbits fucked like Rabbits, and bred like rabbits, and they do all sorts of bad things for our beautiful environment.

    so true!
    still so sad tho.

i remember a few years ago, my mother's ancient mutt managed to catch and kill a small squirrel in our backyard. :( my old cat used to catch mice and bring them to the backdoor as a 'prize' for me. hahaha. animals are simply....animals, and no matter how much we domesticate them, they still manage to hold onto a lot of their natural instincts and desires.
