Taking a child to a concert.

What are your thoughts on taking a three year old to a Pearl Jam concert?

Originally, my pregnant wife and I were going to go to the 9/22 show at Key Arena, but she has recently been put on bed rest (if we are lucky, she will be taken off) and is due 10/20, so it is looking like it is just me. This is a shame because my daughter (Cameron) went to Albany and DC in utero in 2006 and we were hoping that my son (Michael) would be able to go to Key Arena in utero.

So, maybe I am just crazy, but with proper ear protection, etc, do you think I could take my 3 year old daughter. She loves music, but I don't know . . . thoughts?

There was a toddler wearing ear defenders in front of me at the O2 arena in London. He seemed happy enough during the show, but after watching his parents juggle holding him, pacifying him when he got tired, taking him to the toilet etc all through the PJ set I'd be very reluctant to take my 3.5 year old until she was much older. They seemed to miss a lot of the concert between them.

I don't think she would enjoy it that much. I don't know how much of a freak you are about PJ, but I would hate to get distracted from the show to attend to her needs (which of course would need to be attended to :)). My suggestion is, unless it's a child care issue, pass!
... and the will to show I will always be better than before.

I would love to have taken my 3 1/2 year old but as previous people pointed out, they're still very young, it'll finish wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy past bedtime and I just dont know if at that age they are capable of withstanding a whole concert...maybe 6 is a more realistic age. I saw a 5/6 year old at Manchester who seemed to enjoy it but was in and out to the toilet like a yoyo!
    I need a coffee!

Concerts are no place for children under 12. She'd be miserable, not to mention exposed to all kinds of stuff that kids that young shouldn't be exposed to. Get a sitter. You'll both be happier.

I wouldn't be happy if I got stuck sitting next to a crying kid during a show.

    2 words...baby sitter

Thanks for the input, I kinda already assumed that, but needed to hear it I guess. I think my daughter would be fine as she is not a crier, but it might be a little much for her.

My daughter went to her first show when she was 8 or 9.

  • If you wait till shes ready ,(older)the experiance will be good for both of you and something really to remember..attention spans of kids are very short....I have a 4 and 6 yr old and it will be a couple years or more before I would bring them to PJ.
I ve taken them to local music festivals ,and while they love rockin out they also love to play hide and seek and chase with other people trying to enjoy the show ,So I spend all my time trying to keep them out of trouble and as a result miss most of the shows ...my 2cents

Hey man, sounds like you've decided not to take your child to the show, which is the right move. Seems like you knew that from moment one.

Let me just interject some humor. The link below is a minute long mock advertisement from Saturday Night Live in the early 1990s. The product is Bad Idea Jeans. When you wear them, you have bad ideas. Maybe the skit isn't terribly funny but there is a good lesson in it: Everyone has bad ideas.

If you asked me about taking a 3 year old to a Pearl Jam concert, I'd ask if you were wearing that old acid-wash pair of Bad Idea Jeans.

    Classic.

  • My son is nearly 3 and he got to go to several shows in utero in the summer of 06. Unfortunately, there are just too many things he does not need exposed to at this age so he is staying at grandmas for two nights next week. I am going to wait until he is quite a bit older. Also, as a previous poster mentioned, I would not want him to throw a giant fit and disrupt people around me who are enjoying the show.

Don't, but if you do, use both earplugs and over-ear protectors.
ADD 5,200 to the post count you see, thank you. :)
