Boom or Brendan O'Brien?
So I have heard a few times that BOB played all the piano parts on backspacer? I was just wondering if anyone knows if there is truth behind that, because in that 10 minute making of backspacer video you can clearly see Boom in the studio?

the "making of backspacer" is really not what the title says. That's PJ's warehouse, where they rehearse to either prepare for the studio, or prepare for a show/tour. Boom is part of the live arsenal, like all of the guys' guitars and amps. Just sits (surfs) around waiting for its turn to shine!
The "Making of Backspacer" was really just clips of the band rehearsing.
That is a good point, but going along with that point, if he is rehearsing and working on all of these songs with them, why would he not record them? UNLESS that was them preparing for the tour, and he was simply playing what BOB played on the album, but it doesnt make sense to me either way
It's really not so confusing!!
Prep for the tour, and arrangements. Why doesn't he record with the band? Simple - he's a hired gun to put it simply. Riot Act was different as he was a breath of fresh air, and also had writing credits on LBC. Then he toured with the band - and in order to do so it had to be established whether he'd be a full time member (and receive publishing royalties/performance royalties) or just a "hired gun" and just get paid to play.
He's not in any of the official promo pictures.
B'OB is also a classically trained pianist. You get the job done quicker and more efficiently using someone who is trained for it. Many examples of this usually deal with studio/session drummers. Just look up Josh Freese on wikipedia.
Boom doesn't seem to be the most accomplished keyboard player and the 2 ideas he has contributed are very similar. I would be suprised to find out he is a better piano player than BO'b.
This about sums it up.

He wasn't chosen because they auditioned a lot of people and he played the best. He was chosen because they felt comfortable taking him on the road with them and he is able to fit into the texture the way they need him to.

that's both fucking hilarious and SO believable.
Agree 100%
Boom seems to be a bit clumsy and hits two keys when he supposed not to do that, he is a COOL DUDE.
