It was a shock when I heard about his death. I read "The Basketball Diaries" when I was 15, and it really got me interested in the underbelly of society (as an observor, not a participant!). I got to see him perform with his band, as well as his spoken word performances.
He did a book signing with Leonardo DiCaprio when the movie came out, so I had him sign the photo of him and his parents taken by Annie Lebowitz. It proudly hangs on my wall.
I always considered him an NY version of Charles Bukowski.
