Does anyone know what the reference to, or if there is one, on Rearview Mirror when the Lyric goes "finally the Shades are raised" and in Daughter "The Shades come down". It has always meant something to me and it has been powerfull. Anyone else?????????

Shades = window coverings, sunglasses, darkness, etc. Could have a literal or figurative meaning :ugeek: :D:D:D

I see it as letting the light (or enlightenment) in - RVM and keeping others from seeing in - Daughter

yeah pretty sure it's window shades and the girl in daughter is escaping in rearviewmirror.. hence finally the shades are raised...
  • shades = abuse

daughter as we all know is about a girl with a learning disability. When she can't make her mother proud...the shades go down (ie nobody sees what goes on)

rearviewmirror --finally the shades are raised--meaning the abuse is behind you. In your rearviewmirror.

At least thats the way I interpret it.

The other connection is: "I guess it was the beatings, made me wise"
  • Yeah, I agree with what other people have said. Rearviewmirror (to me) is all about coming to terms with the past (the stuff Daughter talks about) and then leaving it behind.
  • What great songs!
  • oh ahah when i read the title i thought you meant the sunglasses matt has on in the new backspacer photoshoots

  • For RVM: I always pictured someone wearing sunglasses to cover up their black eye, who, when looking in the rearview mirror as they escape from the situation, finally gets to uncover her/his hidden secret and know they wont have to face it any longer........

For Daughter: Always presumed just a metaphor for the darkness coming into the room......the abuse reappearing with the parent coming home....
