Neat release idea
So, this is pretty radical, and pretty much impossible to actually do for most bands except perhaps Radiohead, but hear me out. We were given the Speed of Sound demo, and it had a beautiful raw acoustic sound to it. Then the clips came out, and it almost sounds like country music to me... it's got that Southern 'bounce' to it. I personally will be replacing the official version with the demo when I listen to Backspacer from beginning to end, but I thought of something else as well.. I wonder if any (or many) of these Pearl Jam songs sounded one way, and ended up radically different on the album? So my thought is this: how damn cool would it be if Pearl Jam were to release even an EP's worth of tracks - but only digitally, and with four versions of each song, all radically different from each other, and let us make the album what we want it to be in terms of takes? My gut feeling tells me that these songs have probably all been something different than the end result at various stages of their births.. why not let us choose our favourites? Once again, just a dream, nothing more.. it's probably nearly impossible to do.

The final version will fit the album better.. The demo stands better on its own.
You might as well just skip Speed of Sound.. the demo won't sound right if you throw it in the mix.
Just because you like the band doesn't mean you should put anybody down. I think it is a good damn idea.
Benjs, I appreciate your creative contribution. Radiohead did the remix with Nude with the "stems". Even if Pearl Jam did that, it would be cool.
The band seems to write a lot of material for the albums. I think that Ed writes over each song in a way that fits that particular piece of music. He could probably figure out a way to make lyrics fit over the music or the band could figure how to rearrange the music to fit the lyrics better.
Good idea!
Speaking from a songwriters point of view..the demos are the growing stage of the song...theyre the beginning of the songs life...songs change, mould and shape as they are played live, as they are bounced off other band members and when the producer hears them...sometimes our demo's are keepsakes for the band...a reminder of where a song started..."speed of sound" demo was probably released as it stood up well as it was then...i dont understand how you can say, you'll replace songs and you already want something different...people forget that bands/songwriters pour their heart and soul in to every song...especially pj...people are so easy to critique but you have to trust the band...trust what they have given us..enjoy the album...let it live in your head for a while before swapping songs...
