'Rediscovering' certain songs

Hey folks! I've been a PJ fan for a mere 9 months or so, since picking up Ten back in January. Since then I've been hooked, picking up the rest of their albums over the next few months and listening to pretty much nothing but until recently. Even though I listened to the albums as much as possible, I still apparently missed over a lot of good stuff (not on Ten though, I'm quite familiar with those songs by now :P ). Lately I've been hearing songs again like I seemed to have not heard them before, and coming to love them.

Example: after seeing them in Calgary about a month ago and getting rocked by STBC, I've taken to listening to Vitalogy more and more. Actually, I've been listening to all of their quicker, punkish songs and loving them.

Then one day Alone popped on on iTunes , and it was like I hadn't heard it before. I must've listened to it only a few times when I first got Lost Dogs, and couldn't believe how good it was. It makes me wonder how I missed it the first time around!

Even more recently, I've come to listen to some No Code songs more. I never really got into Red Mosquito before, and like Alone, I'm not sure why. Same goes with In My Tree. It's an incredible song. I love how PJ has so many songs, and so much variety in their songs that there's literally something for every mood, and I can understand how people have been fans for so long. I don't imagine myself ever getting tired of listening to their music!

Granted, I've been a fan for a mere 9 months. What about you folks? Any songs that over the years have crept back up on you and driven themselves into your head?

  • the albums are great and all, but their live stuff is where its really at... i barely listen to their albums anymore because they are so great live...definately get more live shows!
it's largely due to eddie that i liked to jump off of things as a child...
  • Ahh ya, forgot to mention that. I found out about the PJ bootleg site through this forum a little while back, and haven't listened to much on there yet, but have definitely looked for certain songs. It is also amazing how they seem to sound as good, if not absolutely better live than on the albums sometimes. So much more energy and emotion. I don't like listening to the album version of Given to Fly anymore after hearing it sped up live. Same goes with Even flow.

Or hearing Black without the "We belong together" tag on the end. That too.

certain album versions of songs are good... but upon initial listen its obvious they would sound much better live... which is why i think a lot of people bitched way too early about "the fixer"... i heard it and it wasnt my fav right off the bat, but i knew it'd be stronger live... and man... what a sing a long...

i think others like sleight of hand are better live

For me I rediscovered an entire album's worth of material last fall when I was waiting for my SDE of Ten to show up. I'd placed a self-imposed moratorium on Riot Act for about four years because I didn't care for it, and, to be honest, had virtually forgotten about it. I've had it in steady rotation since. There's still about 30% of it I skip, but it's grown on me significantly. What a nice surprise that was to find an entire album worth of material on my cd rack one day. "Save You" might be one of my absolute favorite songs by this band.

  • With the 4 Philly shows around the corner, I have started to listen to each CD. I play it from start to finish to listen to every song. I do this a few times through and move on to the next. Try it. *Don't forget to play Mother Love Bone, and Into the Wild. ;)
