Preparing for arrival of Backspacer Vinyl - stereo setup Q's

As I'm waiting for the Backspacer vinyl to arrive before I listen to a thing, questions for those of you who are better at sound setups than I am (and which may benefit others).

I have my old (new-to-me) Technics turntable setup to my 10 year old Sony component receiver, with a phono pre-amp in between. Here's the issue. I have a 5.1 sound system coming out of the Sony component receiver with satellite sized speakers plus a subwoofer. When I choose the 2-speaker option, my satellites on left and right are the only speakers to play, and my subwoofer does not. Satellites obviously sound rather mid-range and tinny without the subwoofer filling in the low-end. The other option is to play it where it puts the vocals in the center-channel, and the left and right speakers are somewhat discrete and the subwoofer is filling in the bass. It seems to somewhat "pro-logic" the sound to use the center channel, but since it's using the subwoofer, it sounds better than the 2-speaker option... Should I pull my old Aiwa 5" speakers out of storage to listen in true "stereo"?

Thanks! :D

maybe, or just search craigslist for some old floor speakers. they can usually be had for cheap and they really thump if they have 12" woofers. norm mentions headphones and i say everyone should have an EXCELLENT pair on hand. personally i have a $150 pair of beyerdynamic dt 770 pro headphones. works like a charm ;)

I've got a pair of 24 year old Sony speakers that are probably about 9". They sure thumped when I would listen to Vitalogy vinyl in the early 90's! One speaker is a little blown though... I may have to set those up just to listen to this one. :)
