One big difference between my two favorite bands...

Mods, let me preface this by saying that I'm not discussing anything in detail here - just how there are fundamental differences in how some bands react to the inevitable. With that being said I'm hoping for some intelligent discussion that doesn't violate any terms of use.
WILCO - Starting with Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, whenever their new albums hit the internet they set up a link on their website asking fans to donate money to a good cause if they have downloaded it. Sure, not everyone will - but they have raised a ton of money this way, especially knowing most fans have already pre-ordered the album or will be buying it when available.
PEARL JAM - Tries to sweep everything under the rug and pretend the internet doesn't exist, except when offering presales on everything from the new album to posters to water bottles. True, there is a whole page of charities available on their website that you could donate to at any time, but that's not the point.
One thing that a lot of bands forget is that a street date is nothing more than a marketing tool. It allows time for the preparation required when it comes to distributing an album on a large scale and nothing more. If they didn't want anyone hearing it yet they wouldn't give copies out to their friends, family, or the media.
Look, I'm not bashing them because they have been and always will be my favorite band. I'm just a bit surprised that they haven't started handling these situations differently.

Well... everyone has their own prerogative. It's possible that the idea hadn't occurred to the 10C people yet, or that they already have established channels of charitable giving in place and would like to stick to them, or...
There are probably dozens upon dozens of hypotheticals that could be generated to explain the differences between one organizations approach and the approach of another. 10C is run by a finite number of people and they can only do so much at a time, but I think the bottom line is that it never hurts to make a suggestion when you think you have a good idea. And that Wilco idea sounds like a good idea to me. Why not give people an opportunity. It couldn't hurt.:)
And it isn't a secret PJ is not a fan of new technology. But there comes a time when we all have to evolve. If they continue to fight the new media, they will be left in the dust, unfortunately.
