Remind me again why a leak and exposure is bad?

I dont understand that statement.
Its one thing to say "hey I dont believe in downloading" and to personally refuse to do it. Thats great. Thats your perogative. But I get the feeling alot of the antidownloading crew, feel somehow it can be curbed, stopped or whatnot. I think thats silly at best and ignorant of the fact that millions of people download illegally.
Pearl Jam's record leaked early. The music is getting out there. People are now exposed to the new album. How is that a bad thing?
For all those people who hear the leak and dont buy an actual cd, there are people who hear it and decide to buy some merch, or a ticket for a tour date or whatnot.
I fail to see how exposure of music is a bad thing.
Pearl Jam, probably do want to be paid for their work, but I also think that is not realistic in modern day 21st century world. People dont want to pay money for music. Radiohead let people decide, and most paid nothing. That says it all folks.
I also think the band and ANY BAND want as many people to hear the music as possible.

its not like Backspacer is thematically tied to its release date. it doesnt matter. i think you should pay for it (not that they need the money), and as long as you do, absolutely no harm is done. i assume they want to be payed for it.
personally, i dont get the 'thrill' of cracking open a cd case (which is a royal pain in the ass, btw), but if thats your thing, then by all means wait. if not, who cares?
The band would prefer you not steal their shit.
i'm sure its on there.
This argument is flawed. A pre order for anything does not entitle you to have said thing whenever you want.
By downloading the album "whenever", you are contributing to the theft of protected material.
Since you are such a big fan you pre ordered I would think such a big fan would respect the band. Guess not.
this idea that the band i've spent untold amounts of money on and have hyped unrelentingly to everyone i know since Ten would be so hurt by this is.... well if thats the case they've lost touch.
but the only people up in arms are people a little too high and mighty.
VEDDER FEARS TICKET PRICE HIKE
September 24, 2007
PEARL JAM star EDDIE VEDDER fears he'll have to increase concert ticket prices after years of fighting to keep them low - because fans keep stealing his songs. The rocker was one of the leading voices against high ticket fees - and famously took on Ticketmaster in America - but now he feels downloading is killing music and he'll need to seek profits elsewhere. Vedder says, "A lot of people are getting your music without having to pay, and it's only $12. "I ordered eggs at a little restaurant in Seattle and it was $9.50. I was thinking, 'You can't spend two extra bucks for a record that you put your heart and soul into?' "I think the problem is to charge more for tickets, which is something we've always been abhorrent to do; either that or you're gonna have to start accepting sponsorships, or start selling your music to Viagra. "I'm not sure how we'll do it. I'm glad we gave money away when we did - when it came in from making records. We kind of spread it around and helped people in our community and abroad in different ways."

Hey G it's almost not worth trying to explain it to these fools around here they are classless at best  ..
can you not grasp the overly dramatic, ridiculous, self righteousness tone? I'M BENFITTING THIS BAND MONETARILLY AND OTHERWISE. Its not like i personally went to Ed's house, kicked in his door, and called his wife a whore and spit in his face! this is so silly...
as to the original post, there is probably truth to the argument that getting music without paying for it can benefit, but i dont know. either way, downloading is here to stay and the industry has to adapt. i got no answers, though.
