    A little off topic but couldn't that same argument be said for Darius Rucker when he was with Hootie and the Blowfish? I always thought he tried to sound like Ed when I first heard their album.

    Absolutely. That band formed in 86 and its like they waited 8 years to pick a popular lead singer to impersonate before they released an album.
