Evacuation: Not a great song, many people dislike it, I like Ed's screams at the end
You Are: Not a great song, Ed's contribution seems weak like most of Riot Ace.
Get Right: Horrible song, should not have been released, maybe a weak B-Side
Unemployable: Ed saved this song with the cool lyrics and delivery and Mike helped, cool song
The Fixer: Horrible song, but it may not be all Matts fault as Ed took it and ran with it
Johnny Guitar???: Hopefully the trend does not continue

Just my opinion, I am sure people disagree....

I disagree with a lot of it with the exception of Evactuation. Song bites.

  • Hello People, nice to meet you, I respect your opinion and tastes.
  • Agree with Evacuation - always disliked that song,. I do like the music , it suffers from a bad chorus.

I agree with you about Evacuation. To me, that is the second worst PJ song PJ has recorded. I would only put Sweet Lew below that...and now that I think about it even that might be better. It has some cool music in there but overall (to me) it sucks! I don't know whether to blame Ed or Matt for that song. Other than the chorus, some of the music sounds awkward to me.

I really like all the other songs you mentioned though. What do you think about Matt's Lost Dogs output? I think they are great.

You think only 40% of them suck. That gives Johnny Guitar a 60% chance of being at the very least "Not a great song" or a "cool song"!!

Maybe you should have titled the post 40% of Matt's Songs Suck! 8-)

What about Cropduster and In The Moonlight?

I LOVE all of Matt's songs, especially "Evacuation." What a killer song. I've never understood this board's hatred of that song. It just f-ing rocks.

There's something about the timing of Matt's songs that makes them pop out. They're challenging, and to me that truly represents mid-era Pearl Jam, which aims for more challenging and obscure songs than rock anthems.

It's a fucking lame and stupid idea for a thread. It's been done 100 times. I feel bad for Matt...people starting threads on his band's message board about how his amazing songs supposedly "suck" because people are too stupid to grasp his style of songwriting.
  • Pretty much like all of Matt's songs except You Are, mostly because of the lyrics. Musically I think he writes the most interesting and challenging music in the catalogue. Not that challenging = good, but it is nice to have a song or two that stretches the boundaries. Can't wait for Johnny Guitar!!!

Also, I think it's weird that the OP focused in on Ed's performance on each of the song's. I know that type of fan.
  • I once read a quote (it might have been the lost Dogs insert) where Ed says that Matt writes songs at a level that they need a ladder to get to (or something like that).

I'm on the fence here. I agree with the fact that Evacuation and Get Right are weak. I love You Are and the Fixer is the best of the bunch.

Yes they are! GTF is probably one of my top 5 PJ songs, if not number ,1 so its no surprise we wouldn't see eye to eye on Evacuation. Things would be boring if we all loved/disliked the same tunes.

I heard Eddie call it a "straightforward rock" song once, I think that's my problem with it. I just don't see that Stone riff or Mike lick that gets me really pumped to hear that song. It's not a horrible song, just not one that I think needs to be played as much as it does. I enjoy the Even Flow solos, so I piss during GTF

Yup! And I love how there is no consensus on favorite PJ albums. The band really has something for most rock fans

I think you're right. For some reason I thought Hitchiker was his, but its not. Still think In the Moonlight is a Great song. Sounds a little incomplete to me (lyric/vocal wise) so I can see why some wouldn't like it, but I love the music.
