Going to NIN's final show tomorrow (PJ related)

So, Trent has announced that tomorrow night's show at The Wiltern in Los Angeles is essentially the last NIN show ever (or at least for the foreseeable future).

I'm lucky enough to be going, but my feelings are really conflicted. I want to soak in the elation of being able to be one of the lucky few to attend the final show but I can't stop thinking about the feeling I'm going to have when the concert ends and it is all over.

I was at the show at the Palladium last week (where they tore through The Downward Spiral in its entirety) and I left that show broken, beaten, and bruised physically. But I don't think that will compare to the emotional beating I will take tomorrow.

Got me thinking...as much as I love NIN, they don't hold a candle to PJ in my eyes. What would happen if PJ announced a final tour/show? To what lengths would you go to be there? What emotions would you be feeling before, during, and after the show?

Sorry to be such a downer tonight...

I would have been there, if I didn't live 3,000 miles away. Will be there in spirit and following the setlist via friends on twitter. While I am sad, TR has said he will go on with new projects an that he is not done making music. Artists have to get tired of doing the same thing. I will disagree with you on NIN not 'holding a candle to' PJ. They are both excellent entities, and very different in their creations, but similar in their caring for their fans. Regarding PJ being 'done'. This is a PJ board - I doubt anyone would be thrilled about that! If it was close I'd try to go; if it was in Cali, not likely as much as I'd want to.

I think though, PJ is a wide-reaching entity, more of a collective in that everyone writes songs, and its large enough to expand to whatever the band decides PJ is at any given time. With NIN, it is my sense that the work that Trent wants to do in the future doesn't necessarily fit under the umbrella that is the NIN entity.

Ignoring the point of your thread, but they played The Downward Spiral in its entirety that is fucking awesome and at least they are going out with a god damn bang!

    I will be there tonight!

NIN played 31 songs / 2 hours 45 minutes on Tuesday at the Fonda Theatre.

Gary Numan has played with them at all of the current L.A. shows. Eric Avery played on Tuesday, as did the singer from Dillinger Escape Plan. Dave Navarro is rumored for tonight, which is a bit underwhelming, since he loves in L.A., and seem to pop-up everywhere.

Bowie would be a dream. Love and Rockets would be great. Devo seems feasible.

Years ago, in the early 90's I knew I'd be happy as long as PJ and The Simpsons were still around. While PJ's music in the latter half of their career has changed dramatically from what I first enjoyed, I'm happy that I still get to see the boys every couple of years.

met some locals in line at the Echoplex the other day, and one of them said that Camp Freddy is playing a show tonight, so Dave will probably be busy. just passing along what I heard.

for certain bands, I dont really care for special guests. with PJ, the only person I would like to see on stage with them is Cornell (or Jack or Dave). why would I want to hear anyone other than EV sing?

with NIN, Maynard is the only guest I can think of that would blow my mind. Gary Numan was cool cuz his voice was awesome on Metal. Peter Murphy in Chicago...no thanks.

Peter Murphy ruins Reptile. He fucked up the lyrics two nights in a row at the T5 shows in NYC two weeks ago. And yeah, hanging upside down was cool, but still....

Now, to the point of the OP. Yes, very sad. I am only grateful I catch those shows and specially the Webster Hall show (the 1st time they did TDS) Best show I've seen in years. Now, I don’t even want to think of how sad it would make me if PJ decided to end it. DAMN!

Reznor, despite being an extremely great musician, is nothing more than a primadonna. Hes taking a page from the rap game and "retiring" to build excitement and milk the tour for all it's worth. Don't kid yourself, I'm sure at the most 5 years from now he'll be back on the circuit.

That being said, NIN is great, and I'm sure the show will be too - but lets not pull the wool over our own eyes - Reznor makes Maynard look reasonable.
  • I don't think that anyone has responded to the question you asked...
If PJ announced an end, I think it would be interesting.
If it was a tour... I think the relativly small but extremely loyal fans would go to as many shows as possible with the last show being the one we would all go to.
If it was announced during a tour that this would be it... a mad dash would happen and all of us would try to get to that show (at least I would). Kinda like a wake of a close friend.
Reflecting on it all, I think it would be a rather happy and sad event. Happy because most of us have experianced this band while it was peaking and have enjoyed the ride rather than jumping on a bank wagon after the wagon has lost most of its giddy up. Sad because we are so loyal we would miss the highs and lows associated with the shows, tickets, music, etc.

ludicrous! Trent actually has made it clear that he will continue to make music and probably play shows, but NIN, as a touring act, is done. what does that mean? I suspect that he will take music in other directions and when he does play shows they will probably be new material beginning to end rather than the songs he has been playing for 20 years. he has also said that many of the songs he wrote for the first 2 albums were written by an angry kid, and for 2 hours a night he transforms into that person, but it's not really who he is anymore, which makes perfect sense.

I disagree with your statement that he is a prima donna. I actually dont think he is much different than Ed. he has a subtle, dry sense of humor that most people dont get and instead they take him seriously.

I dont think you'll see NIN tour again playing Head Like a Hole and Terrible Lie, but Trent will not leave the game forever...I hope. but I disagree that he's just doing it to build excitement. if that were the case, he'd be playing arenas trying to milk every last dollar rather than playing 500-3000 person venues and charging less than PJ is this year.

I would agree with this. I actually met him this summer for a second. He was funny and nice to everyone. No prima donna-ness that I saw, from him or any of the band.

I think there's a lot of people with NIN on the brain tonight.

Simply unreal. 37 songs, 3.5 hrs, total destruction during Wish, and Ron Jeremy tried to sit down 6 feet away from me in the balcony only to get denied by security haha. Hope some of you were there to enjoy this epic show.

    35. The Day The World Went Away
    36. Hurt
    37. In This Twilight
  • Still trying to recover from last night, running on barely 2 hours of sleep. As previously mentioned, the show went 37 songs long -- almost 3.5 hours. It wasn't over until 12:45, at which point I was completely drained. I was sitting in the third row of the balcony -- I can't imagine how tired the people on the floor must have been.

It was epic, and beautiful, and moving. I'm pretty sure Trent cried during Hurt and In this Twilight.

The good news -- to emphasize what has already been posted -- is that Trent announced that he/they would still be making music, just not touring as NIN. What that means is still a little vague to me, but as long as they continue to put out music I think I will survive.

As sad as I am that it's all over for NIN, as soon as the concert was over I was able to cheer myself up by thinking about the fact that my next show will be the first of 4 PJ shows this month. :)

    37 songs and 3 hrs 20 minutes...what a great show!

I saw three of the farewell shows, and I think I liked the Fonda the best.

I really enjoyed Gary Numan last night...."Metal" and "I Die, You Die", were both amazing. I took a 5 minute break during the pianist songs....Navarro seemed out of place, and the Dillinger Escape Plan fellas made it seem as if they released some wild chimps onto the stage....they shoulda played some "Benny Hill" music for them!

Gary Numan was with NIN at the London show :P

But thank god, no more NIN :)

    Now im running!
  • I was in the 2nd row in the pit. I didn't see any tears.

To further rain on the parade, I will also say that I have seen them play better shows. But the story is better if it is told that last night was their best show ever. It's kinda like State College in 2003. The show the night before in Buffalo was better. But everyone always talks about State College.

I'm just glad they didn't play for 3 1/2 hours at the Echoplex. It was too hot in there, and I wouldn't have lasted that long.

Myself and a lot of other people thought that we had seen the last PJ ever in 2000. That story goes that the next show they played was their best show ever.

Way to ruin "the story," haha. I don't care what anybody else says, though, that was a fucking GREAT show.
