Supporting the local music stores

Sigh. I posted something similar to this in the Porch, but to me, it's more an issue about the local ma and pop stores.
Who will be buying Backspacer from an independent retailer? I'm bent on rather helping the little guy since the band is still willing to help them as well as their corporate partner. We've got to take care of our good corner stores or corporate giants like Target will take them over.

Is gonna sound w@nky, but is nice to feel part of the community.
Short answer to your question/suggestion, yes I will.
Very interesting post; I for one will avoid buying from the corporate giants. I only buy cd's from a local cd store here in MD with their vast selection on cd's dvd's and vinyl. Last year I can recall when ACDC released *Black Ice* at Wal Mart exclusively, same for Ziggy Marley with Target and others but I just waited till they were sold to my local cd store and bought them used. I know this brings in more money to these artists with these exclusive contracts but I refuse to buy from these corporate outlets.
I'll buy Backspacer from my local spot just love going in there and spend a couple hours shopping for good music.
Peace

Some of the nicest people work there... the owner is a great guy... i've seen Tegan and Sara, Rilo Kiley, John Doe, Tom Brosseau, Matt Costa, The Bird And The Bee, Airborne Toxic Event, Silversun Pickups all do acoustic in-stores for free. I want them in business... so i give them my business.
Hail, Hail!!!
what are you but my reflection? who am i to judge or strike you down?

Now, most of this is probably because I live in the 'burbs of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Target is based out of Minneapolis. But for me, Target has always been to a certain extent my local 'mom and pop' store. The reason I say that is because I have shopped at my local Target since I can remember. I'm 28 years old, but I still remember going to the same Target when I was 5-6 years old.
Hell, I even worked there in high school, and again a second time when I moved back home after dropping out of college. (Don't worry, I'm back in school! Bleh!) So from that side of things, yes I did/do see Target as the 'big bad' corporation that it is. So for me it hasn't been all happy go lucky.
But I have also worked for the local independent record store as well. And to me, they are just as bad, if not worse than Target when it comes to the commodity that is music. First things first, used record sales are, at the very least a moral issue when it comes to legality, if not out right illegal. (I'm no lawyer, let alone a intellectual property expert)
Also, I'm sure my local record store isn't the only one who sells 'Imports'. You do realize what those really are is ILLEGAL BOOTLEGS of copyrighted music. When I worked there I was told 'If anyone complains about the sound quality of the 'import' you give them a full refund, no questions asked.'
Also, when certain bands came to town (the only one I heard by name was Dave Matthew's Band) we had to pull all the 'imports' in case someone associated with the band came into the store and found us selling them. Because the company didn't want to be sued for selling ILLEGAL copies.
So, after these experiences in my life, I look at it like this, while yes, the local record store will have a bigger/'better' selection of music, they don't CARE AT ALL about music, or the artist. They just care about PROFIT. And with the big box chains, sure they might not have the best selection of music, but they don't expect to make much, if any money on music sales. They sell it cheap to get you into the store, in hopes you will by something else that they have a better margin on.
So after all this long rambling post, I guess what I'm trying to say is, for me, when it comes to music, I want to support the actual artist that produced the music. So for me, buying it where I can get it cheapest is fine, because the artist will still get money (granted yes, not much, but that IS NOT the retailer's fault, that is the record company/distributors fault)
Till there aint nothing left worth taking away from me.....
Damnit Speedy! That post wasn't for you!
