If I had a dollar for everyone who ever heard a new Pearl Jam song and thought it sucked..

but came back a few weeks later and thought it was ok..

and then came back a few years later and thought it was a classic..

I'd be pretty damn rich.

People who set high expectations on the new stuff by comparing it to songs they've grown up with and have had life experiences with, fun college days, falling in and out of love, and so on through out the years, well of course they are going to think the new stuff sucks.

Have we not learned our lesson by now?

I remember being turned off by Vs. after first listen coming off of Ten, even more so with Vitalogy, No Code and so on.

Memorable, classic music takes time because it has to sink in and become relative with your life.

Its funny how the first thing people do when they hear a new Pearl Jam song is compare it to other Pearl Jam songs it sounds like.. they do that because they need something in the music relative to their life and those other Pearl Jam songs provide them with that.

The new music is going to take time to become relative to new life experiences. People are way to quick to judge sometimes.

The brain needs to first figure out the song, then associate it with good or emotional experiences in life.. this takes time.

You got it right. I thought 1/2 of Binaural was an impersonation of Pink Floyd/John Martyn when I first heard it, threw it on the shelf (next to the Pink Floyd & John Martyn), then a few weeks later hey presto, I loved it. Have stopped listening to previews etc, waiting until the album arrives, then see what happens.

If you do get those dollars and have some spare?? ..... :)

i never compare the new stuff to previous efforts, that would be lazy on my part...i listen for progression and growth of the music as a band...maybe even some experimenting

i just think some of this new stuff lacks progression not saying that its not catchy or that when the Fixer is on the radio i dont nod my head all over the place but i just dont see much progression in the new stuff

but as always i will play the hell out of the album just like all the other ones

See I'm actually the complete opposite. I usually think every Pearl Jam song is awesome when I first hear it (except for The Fixer which I'll never like). When I first listened to Avocado, I thought every song was great. Weeks later I realized that there are a few songs I don't like.

Some music takes awhile to really sink in, but I don't think PJ makes much of it. I'd say Vitalogy-Binaural has the bulk of it.

There seems to be quite a few people around here that condition themselves to liking albums, imo.
  • I think Just Breath sounds awesome from what I have heard. Everything for that matter sounds good from what I have heard. This album may not become my favorite Pearl Jam album of all time but I bet I will listen to it alot. I know that I didnt like Binaural very much to begin with, then after shunning it for a year or two, I came around and now it is probably my third favorite PJ album. You just never know. Sometimes it takes awhile to make a connection with an album.
