Death Cab For Cutie

Fans?
I've heard their name before. Thought I remembered them opening for PJ in the past. Listening to them right now, and I am luke-warm, but I think it could grow on me.
Any good particular place to start? I'm just sampling some random playlist on imeem.com

one of those bands i really really loathe... hearing his voice makes me want to commit suicide
I thought he sounded familiar! Postal Service is alright...and Death Cab is ok too...I like the music, but yeah...I think his voice is what just doesn't click for me..

I love Pearl Jam in its own category of MUSIC before anything else, then classic rock, and a few bands introduced since 2000. Death Cab is in the minority...The White Stripes, Vampire Weekend, EARLY Coldplay, besides that, I only listen to PEARL JAM, stones, beatles, neil young, other classic rock and some 90's music still (i.e. Nirvana, Soundgarden)...BOTTOM LINE, if it caught my attention, it is worth a listen...
1992: Phoenix, Desert Sky Pavilion
1998: RFK Stadium -- Tibetan Freedom
1998: Great Western Forum I
2000: Greek Theater
2006: Great Western Forum I
2008: The Wiltern (EV SOLO)
2008: VH1 The Who Tribute
2009: LA I, LA III, SD
Ben Gibbard's lyrics are some of the best in the buisness, and I view them as one of the flagship indie bands. In terms of what indie rock means in this day and age, where mainstream movies regularly reference and namedrop indie bands, where tv shows feature the sounds of indie rock in the background, and when newsweek talks about indie hipsters, I think the commercialization of indie rock, whether you think that is good or bad, is in some way related to death cab.
That said some wiseacre idiot is gonna come one here and mention they are on a major label, but reguardless of that fact, they are an indie rock band. Just as Modest Mouse is.
I became aware of theese guys in college, and something about the whole vibe of the music strikes me as very collegiate, as wanting something in the past but not knowing how to get it. It sort of summed up the feeling of my first year in college. Of being sort of nostaglic for the past.
Additionally Ben Gibbard's side project Postal Service is another bonafide classic. Give Up, is another album, that is one of the best albums ever made, certainly one of the best of the 2000's.
And they still are cranking out great stuff. Narrow Plans didnt strike me as mindblowingly amazing as Plans or Trans, but Cath and Grapevine Fire, are two amazing songs.
Seth Cohen was exactly right: "Dont mess with The Death Cab"
love little bribes...haven't listened to the rest of the ep yet, but that song is great!
oddly enough, Plans is BY FAR my least favorite album. But, it's all about what you like and what you don't like. I thought that album was over produced commercial trash. Thank God their last album, Narrow Stairs, was a return to form.
The album Transatlanticism is simply brilliant. One of my top 5 releases this decade.
Their first three albums (Something About Airplanes, We Have The Facts And We're Voting Yes and The Photo Album) all have their shining moments, some of their best songs are in these albums ... you can really free a progression from a low-fi sound to a true vibrancy.
Then came the breakout with Transatlanticism ... meshed where they came form and where they were heading beautifully.
For the next album, they left their original label (Barsuk) and jumped to a major label (Atlantic) ... and this is probably why Plans is full of commercial schlock. Ugh.
Anyway, everyone's tastes are different, but, Transatlanticism is the one to get in my mind. It's easy enough to hear all the tracks on youtube these days.

what are you but my reflection? who am i to judge or strike you down?

i was thinkin 'death before dishonor'
I think his voice is the only thing I dont' like. :(

I don't listen to them much anymore, but when i did i really loved transatlanticisim. I'm sure that album would make a top 30 list of best albums released in the 00's for me.

yeah, i can understand that and on Quasi's later albums he didn't sing like that as much but a few weeks ago i listened to Field Studies again which came out in '99, i believe ,and the vocals really stuck out and sounded like death cab for cutie
