Writing a paper - how to include references?

I just started college classes a week ago. I've already received my first assignment of writing a paper. I had a knack for writing papers in high school, and I do realize that these papers could and most likely will be a different breed. Nonetheless, I'm not too worried about the actual paper itself. I'm confident I'll find the facts, info, and citations I need.

What I'm a little concerned about is referencing. On high school papers I was only required to provide a reference page with 3 references. Now, at least 5 references, and I need to reference them in the text of the paper.

Can anyone give me some tips/suggestions on a proper or easy format on including your reference in parethesis in a school paper?

She didn't specify. She said she was pretty flexible, and that she just wanted details such as author, date and source of publication, etc...

references are usually done on a separate page or at the bottom of a page. microsoft word has a tool that can put the reference right after the sentence you are referencing. that's how i would cite my references in college and in high school.

when you use quotes within the body of your essay they have to referenced somehow within the body of the work.

personally im a fan of footnotes.

its a footnote feature. itll add the footnote number wherever you specify and then drop you down to the bottom of the page so you can add the referencing info. if you use APA it really isnt of any help cause you still have to type in the reference info yourself within your essay where you quote.

  • I would get in the habit of using MLA rather than APA as more profs tend to require that one.

depends on what you are studying. i dont think i had an MLA prof throughout my 4 years of undergrad. i studied psychology, so it was all APA, with the exception of my required english classes, and those profs used the chicago style not MLA.

that's funny, I've never had an APA prof with the exception of 1 English assignment where we had to learn to reference in different styles, and the existence of Chicago style was a joke.

Yo, you guys are moving too fast for me.;)

The paper is for a human relations course...I basically have to research the career I'm pursuiting and answer a list of essay questions based upon said career.

sorry to get all pedantic on you, but it's the career you're pursuing, or the career you're in pursuit of, not the career you're pursuiting.

To be technical about it: Associates of Applied Science / Design Emphasis.

In a nutshell, Web/Graphic Design. But this human relations class is a requirement for your first semester.
