IMO I think its crazy also but the thing that freaked people out was the language of one of the lesson plans before they changed it. What it said was that Obama wanted students K -6th to write letters to themselves about what they can do to help the president. and the other assignment was for them to discuss after hearing his speech was what the president wants us to do.

And not evrybody at Fox is anti Obama

Help the President do what, though? Help him get re-elected or help him lead our country in a positive direction? To me, it sounds remeniscent of "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country." I think that's a positive message and can't imagine why anyone wouldn't want their kids to hear it.

Additionally, even if he spouted off a bunch of liberal propaganda, the kids who are old enough to understand it need to learn to think critically and this would be a wonderful opportunity to help learn that lesson. They're going to - and they already do - hear propaganda for the rest of their lives and they can't be shielded from all of it, so the best thing we can do for them is to teach them how to decifer it.
the problem is kids in america are not taught to think critically until late high school or early college. maybe if they taught them at an earlier age they might have a chance at decifering the propaganda.

Try to get them to explain that to you... and they tell you that you need to go live in Iran if you hate America so much.

that is hilarious...and scary, because it's really accurate.

I blame Fox News. For everything.

hahahahaha, FOX News is the only opposite opinion! So you blame them for not joining the other 99% of the media?

This is by far one of the most idiotic, insane, narrow minded, ignorant, hate breeding, campaigns the conservative right has spewed.

Anyone, and I mean ANYONE who says they don't want their kids to watch a speech from THEIR president are FUCKING MORONIC ASS HOLES. And, they deserve to have their voting rights taken away.

umm, the first ammendment has nothing to do with whether or not you agree with letting your kid listen to a speech by the president. it is the freedom of speech, which applies on this forum, not the freedom from speech. maybe if we did not stop teaching civics classes in our schools people would know this shit....there is no ammendment that guarantees peoples' right to be narrow minded imbeciles, although there should be. maybe then we will stop blaming our teachers for turning out generation after generation of morons. the blame should be placed solely on the people making decisions for the kids, mostly the parents.

i think it is very funny how the right is reacting to this. they do not even know what he will say and they are already acting like they are outraged. here is an idea, how about we listen and hear what he has to say and then react rather than prematurely sticking your fingers in your ears and scream "la la la i cant hear what you are saying la la la" like a 4 year old......

Remember how those people showed up at Nader Rallies in 2000 wearing suits made from tin foil and duct tape... or dressed up as an alien or in Star Terk costumes? They weren't helping.
The same principle holds true here... coming up with birth certificates... bringing loaded AR-15s to Town Hall meetings... shouting and screaming to drown out speakers at Health Care debates... crying because the President is giving talk to kids... they aren't helping the Conservatives. They are painting Conservatives as cartoonist characitures that are paranoid, gun-wielding, cry baby conspiricy theorists. They aren't helping... just like the spacemen and Klingons didn't help Nader.

Why do we have "outrage" and "furor" over both an attempt to reform health care and give our kids a pep talk, yet the outrage and furor over an unjust war, firing US Attorneys, outing CIA agents, etc. never seemed to get SO angry?

I actually saw some looney woman crying over the prospect of her kid listening to Obama. :?

this is exactly what is happening now. the conservatives are letting these wingnuts become the mainstream of their party. this is all i am seeing on tv nowadays. images of these people crying, carrying guns to political rallies, throwing lipton tea bags, bringing fake birth certificates, calling obama the antichrist, saying he is going to indoctrinate their kids when as a kid i sat through reagan and bush speeches, etc etc...i am a lifelong democrat, but i feel sorry for the true staunch conservatives and lifelong republicans that are being hurt by these people. these people will make any halfway rational person avoid any candidate the gop were to run for any office. if this is what the mainstream of the GOP is going to be from now on, i think they are going to be in a world of hurt for the next 12 years.

  • And now that the speech is harmless, the crazy end of the right will claim that it was changed because of their "uproar", and the other 90% of the population will hear the innocent speech and see it as just another example of manufactured partisan outrage.

The sad thing is, instead of feeling like they've been used (yet again) by their right wing radio hosts, they will walk away feeling vindicated and that their concern was valid and move onto the next molehill to turn into a mountain.

I just can't comprehend the partisanship, hatred and fear of someone being so deep that you wouldn't let your kid watch the President of the United States.
