It is indeed a sad day, grew up listening to him on WJR, I loved his famous line when a pitcher struck out a batter who just stood there looking " he stood there like the house beside the road", they was great. Truly one of the best ever.

A very sad day. It will be like losing my grandfather when he passes. I feel like I've spent more time with Ernie than my own family. I picked up his 4-Cd set of his highlights a while back. I guess I know what I'll be listening to this weekend.

It's strange because I remember when Kalas passed, and never having heard him broadcast a game, I kind of thought they were making a really big deal about announcer dying.
But now that it's one of the staples of my childhood and teenage years that is going to leave us, I totally understand how all the Philly fans were feeling.
It's so weird because I can actually hear his voice in my head. It's weird the things we latch on to, and remember forever.

I grew up a Jays fan until I was 10 and my family moved to Windsor and that is when I first heard Harwell's voice. It then became listening to Tigers games on the radio instead of Jays games on the radio.

I remember spending hours in my parents backyard working on my pitching while listening to Harwell's call of Tigers game

like you, I can still hear his voice in my head. He is # 2 in my book behind Scully

Thanks to all of you not from Detroit for undetrstanding our heartbreak. Ernie Harwell's voice will be forever in our minds.

There aren't many of these guys left and they don't make them anymore. You always hear all the same stories from every baseball town, with regards to their respective announcers.

Sad that he couldn't just go out naturally. Sad for all you Tigers fans.

St Lou still feels the reverberations of Jack Buck. It'll be a sad day when Mike Shannon passes.
