I know that I'm going to be preaching to the converted here but I had to get this off my chest.

Mike McCready is the absolute shit!

I know, I know, let's state the obvious right? We all know how good a guitarist he is, especially live, but hear me out. I've seen PJ live 12 times since 1993 and he's always sounded great but the O2 show was the first time that I've made it to the front on Mike's side and really watched what he gets up to. Every other time I've seen them I've either been in Stone or Eddie's section, seated or (when I was younger) bouncing around like a fool in the pit! The only other time I've been Mike's side was at Lollapalooza but the camera rig was blocking my view so I only caught a glimpse of him when he came right to the edge of the stage.

The man is pure rock and roll, as much of a 'showman' as a guitarist can be without ever taking the spotlight away from the singer. I love the way that he interacts with the crowd in front of him, smiling and pointing, even chatting and laughing with people in between songs. No matter what people think of Even Flow or Ledbetter, to watch him immerse himself into his solos is a mind-blowing experience. Eddie even introduced him at the O2 as "Mike McFuckinCready!" hence the title of this post.

I can't believe it's really taken me 16 years to actually see Mike play. Sorry Stone, it was great while it lasted! I'll come back to you in a few years! :D

i know what You mean. 15th August was my third PJ show and this time I promised to myself i would be on Mike's side. And I was. Sometimes (the crowd sometimes push me in the center).
I've seen Mike on videos, that's why i wanted to be closer.
He is like a magnet. I almost forgot to look at Ed (yes, probably it's nothing new - we all like Ed).
Mike is just amazing! And His guitar!
Recalling this show makes me smile again.

Fucking awesome! Mike is criminally underrated. I love how people say grunge killed the guitar solo but Mike gets up there and goes balls out every show.

  • Couldn't agree with ya'all more. Was just at the Outside Lands show and was again amazed at that man. One of the more under appreciated guitarists of his time.

Definitely! People talk all the time about Matt being one of the best drummers or Eddie being one of the best singers - which they both are! - but Mike is way up there as one of the best guitarists around right now

  • I was with a couple of friends, one from New Zealand, who had not seen PJ before. He was blown away when Mike played an entire solo behind his head. I told him he does that all the time!

My avatar is a shot of Mike playing the Ledbetter outro solo at the O2. It's my favourite photo that I took that night - Mike, head back, letting rip! Perfect!

  • I've been following Pj since TEN I never considered mike or stone Great guitar players but the first time i saw P J live Mike immediatley became my fav guitar player and before him were Hendrix , page , beck. Eddie van halen . I love the version of little wing mike does from the gorge you can tell hendrix was definetly his fav and he does a great job channeling him . I also saw mike tear it up with ace freely at msg last year on Black Diamond . Ohh and stone may not be a great guitar player but he certainly is more than capable and is Great song and riff writer
  • dude...it's Mike Mother Fucking McCready...it just sounds better!
  • The guy is fantastic. i have been playing guitar and listening to guitar music for 40 years and he just totally blows me away. An absolute master of rock guitar.
