Hey 10c. What's up with shipping costs?

So I'm thinking I'll buy the AmesBros poster book because I'm a big girly fan of poster art. I figure USD$50 aint too bad considering how much these books cost usually.

But what's the deal with USD$40 for postage? Isn't that a little bit excessive? I mean, in NZ dollars that's $60 - enough for 2 CDs and almost the cost of the actual purchase?

I could understand it being that much (almost) for the super deluxe reissue of Ten because it was couriered and bloody heavy, but a book wouldn't cost that much to post.

So climb_high_nz and i thought we'd try to buy 2 at once and split the cost. but 2 books cost USD$80 for postage? What up with that?

Love your work, love your service, but can't justify that much on postage. It's just insane.

I just really like the look of the book. It costs the same on the Ames Bros site. And Amazon doesn't ship it to NZ for some unknown reason.

    LOOK INTO YOUR HEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARTS!!!!

it's not just that book where their postage is ridiculous.

you can pre order the new vinyl for $19, then shipping is $15. it's beyond stupid.

i have ordered many things from amazon and other international sites and never paid that much.

just checked an order history with amazon, brought 3 books, and 2 dvds, and the dvds were tv series so you know at least 3 disc sets, sub total of order = $100, shipping = $25.

ordered the super deluxe edition of Ten with amazon, shipping = $19

ten clubs shipping for the price you are paying should be better then it is, it always takes at least 6 weeks to get an order. i've never waited that long with anyone else.

i think it's cause it's not actually being sold by Amazon, it's from an "amazon seller", so it's up to them if they want to ship it.

EDIT: on second look, the Amazon seller listed is still Ames Bros:

    Seller: amesbros
Rating:92% positive over the past 12 months (12 ratings.) 29 lifetime ratings.
Shipping: In Stock. Ships from WA, United States. See Shipping Rates. See return policy.

it showing up 2nd hand assumes someone bought it recently in nz and paid those shipping costs without REALLY REALLY wanting the book?

unlikely :(:cry::cry::cry::cry: <---that's how it makes me feel

But really 10c.. What 's up with the shipping costs? It's not like me,doompony, and the other downunder crazy folk live on a fucking iceberg in the southern ocean with limited postal service. Look at your postal charges. They are crazy.

Amazon has a soft cover version for $19 that you can preorder with free shipping (if you spend over $25). It looks like it is due to be released in December.

does anyone by chance understand why amazon won't ship a book downunder? seems highly... uh.. fucking stupid. i wonder if they''ll be different with a soft cover.

I believe it's to do with the customs etc. For instance, if you look at the 10c policy when you order stuff that is being shipped outside the States is says something about that. Honestly, I would check eBay... you never know. I used to buy stuff off eBay cause it was the easiest way to get product cause alot of the time it was already in the country cause someone had got hold of it somehow. In the same way that alot of online stores don't ship to Canada, it's all due to customs/duty etc. :(

I've had books shipped before, but shipping is not cheap. Maybe they've changed their policy, but I doubt it. The universities order books from Amazon, I heard.
  • maybe I just trust 10C/PJ too much naively, but I would highly doubt they'd be making any sort of profit off the shipping costs. Remember this is not a high-profile huge corporation that ships thousands of items daily. If anything, there is an administrative charge hidden in there somewhere, as someone is probably actually skateboarding to the post office to get this stuff sent! ;)

Also, given the price of gas in the past few years, the price of shipping for anything has gone up ridiculously. Companies that previously included shipping charges in the price of any given item, now charge freight or shipping on top of the purchase price. Especially a book the size of what that book appears to be. It looks pretty heavy to me.

10C even offers some items free shipping in the US, so what are you Yank's complainin' aboot? I'm Canadian, and when I ordere anything off eBay or Amazon or wherever, I get RAPED. ;) Duty plus international shipping, many times, just makes it not worth it to even buy many things.

If it really bugs you, when you get the book, take it down to your local PO, get it weighed and find out how much it would have cost to get it sent to you. Then send 10C an invoice for the difference. ;)

  • Probably has to do with the fact that its a very big and really heavy book...probably have to pack around it so it doesn't get damaged as well...then shipping to another country with some sort of insurance that it gets there, plus handling....gotta pay the people working for 10c.
  • Yeah, I looked to see how much it would be if someone here bought it and sent it to you.

50.00 for the book, 4.50 tax (WA) plus 11.50 shipping (WA) plus 24.00 to ship to NZ equals 90.00. Same as if you ordered it, no? So if you cut the middleman out, its about 15.00 off, but I estimated low on weight, 3 pounds. If it weighs a lot more than that, it would be fairly close to actual shipping costs (USPS).

true. seems silly to buy a book and pay the same for shipping as the book cost.

i'll just hope jeff ament sees this, feels sorry for me and sends me a copy.

  • Is this item something that might be being sold at any of the shows at the merch table? Maybe you could pick it up there if you're going to any of the shows. Just a thought, then you'd save shipping completely. ;)
