Identity thieves at my store...

So a few weeks back one of the new people at the post office i work at opened up a PO Box for someone without checking their ID properly... they didn't leave proper information so the next day my boss made note of it to ask next time they came in. Well the actual guy came in by coincidence and my boss asked him for more information for the PO Box he opened. To his shock, he said he had never opened a PO Box.That's when she realised it was a case of identity theft where the thief had stolen the man's ID and now was trying to get his mail.

Well, last night I was working and this guy came in saying he needed to check when his PO Box expired, and that he didn't have his key. Of course it was the name of the person's box. I questioned him and he then said it wasn't him but hsi friend was him outside, and went and got his friend (who was accompanied by another person). I basically had to play it cool for 15 or 20 minutes pretending I believed them while I had my boss on the phone in the back and tried to get all the information that I could. They seemed adamant about one envelope in particular that should be in the box and for me to get it, but I just told them there was no mail (we took it all out). Whenever I asked fo ID they had a different story: my favourite was when they tried to convice me that Canada Posts scans and photocopies the ID when we make new PO Boxes... since i'm pretty young some people think i don't know how to do my job... so when I assured them that in the 3 years i'd worked here, we've never done that, they changed thei story again! :D

Anyways, i told them that i was closing soon and that maybe they could return on monday and check with my bosses if there was any mail held anywhere (my bosses were adamant I didn't call the police and just told the people to come back monday when they were here). Then I told them, still trying to act like i believed them, "if you want to give me you phone number I can call you when it comes in?".........And they did! It wasn't the same fake number they used to open the PO Box so I'm hoping its an actual number.

To make sure though, I wanted to go get the licence plate number... by this time there was a couple waiting to be served, and when the 3 guys finally left i told them what was going on and that I was just gonna run out and get their plate number. Turns out the customer waiting worked for Canada Post before he retired and knew exactly what was going on and offered to go get it for me so the guys didn't see me doing it.

Hopefully I'll call the popo today because my bosses wouldn't let me last night and its really bugging me because if someone was trying to get my important documents and there was a chance at catching them, I'd want the person to call the police. Plus they have a tracking number for the parcel they were waiting for so I don't want them to realise its here and come back pissed.

For some assurance, I have the canine protection agency at my store, by which I mean I sometimes bring my 80 lb dog in, who wouldn't hurt a fly but makes people think twice - I once had a shady guy come in 3 or 4 times one night and i texted my brother to bring her over, once the guy saw her his face turned shocked that a dog was suddenly there and never came back! :D She's a husky/shepherd cross with possibly another breed in her, but i've been asked before if she's a wolf hybrid - she's really cute but maybe its that which makes people think twice.

Anyways, the last bit? The person who's identity got stolen is a police officer........... so hopefully these guys get what they deserve!

Cool story. I hope that they catch them. Why did your boss not want you to contact the police?

Your dog story reminds me of an episode of Veronica Mars. In one scene, she is on the phone with her dad while on a stake-out and her dad says, "make sure you have back up." As she is confronted by the suspects she has under surveillance, out from the backseat leaps Back Up, her pit bull (or mastiff), and off run the suspects :lol::lol:
