iTunes has sent me back. I've just finished putting thousands of CDs I had knocking about onto my computer and it has opened up quite a few old doors which have lead to reunions with a few old friends. With so many CDs there were literally hundreds that just got thrown into cupboards and I haven't picked up for a decade or so. iTunes is just 'click and listen', isn't it? It's so easy to get back in touch with a lot of stuff you hadn't been appreciating for so long.

So far, I've found that a few albums sound several times better than they did a long time ago, most notably for me, The Jayhawks "Hollywood Town Hall". What a great album that is!

Anyone else been reunited with the past because of the computer age? Anyone a fan of that album?

The computer age has definitely impacted the way I listen to music. I hardly ever listen to an entire album anymore unless it's a new release I can't get enough of. Otherwise the ipod (with 16k songs) is almost always on shuffle. I'm always running across songs that I'd forgotten about. Lately a lot of Steely Dan seems to be popping up, and I haven't listened to them for years.

And yeah, Hollywood Town Hall is a great album. Clouds is probably my favorite track, but the whole thing is good.
"You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.

Oddly, I think the iPod has had a negative impact on the diversity of my listening experience. I buy cds, load them, maybe listen a couple times and then move on. Going back to vinyl has reversed this trend a bit for me. I love having all of my music aggregated in one place, but I don't know how much I take advantage of it. That said, I'm contemplating an upgrade, as my 80G isn't near enough space. All that live PJ is probably clogging things up too - I haven't listened to much else since my renaissance last summer. ;)

Anyway - The Jayhawks! They ARE a band who cut into my PJ time. I love all things Jayhawks. I think Rainy Day Music tops my list, but Tomorrow the Green Grass and Hollywood Town Hall are close behind. Anyone get the greatest hits thingy yet? I haven't had the cash, but plan on it.

The Jayhawks were a band that I just have that one album I love but never bought any others. I think that it's time to give them a try, as HTH is absolutely beautiful. Isn't there a tenuous Pearl Jam link to the band that the singer was (or is?) married to Victoria Willliams who did Crazy Mary?

I think that the less diversity thing is because it's just so easy to own music now. When I was a kid having about 50 albums was a lot. Now it's so cheap / free to pick up music that everyone can can own 50G! WHen you've go that much music it's difficult to give it all the love it deserves.

  • The other album I've been blown away by this week is The Delgados' "Great Eastern". (Another album I bought when I worked in a record store and was picking up about 5-10 a week that went straight into my home filing system). Wow, that is a well made record, it is just so nicely produced.

I love the ipod. "Fernando" came on shuffle on the way to work tonight. Cracked me up.
"All I Ever Knew" available now in print and digital formats at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and iBooks.

Mark Olson was married to Victoria Williams. " Miss Williams' Guitar" on Tomorrow the Green Grass is about her. I know they split up a few years ago.
