There are fires right now (LA County): Rancho Palos Verdes, La Canada, Azusa. I actually live a few miles east of the La Canada fire, and my older brother lives in Rolling Hills Estates (right next to RPV).

  • Mercy! I was watching some local L.A. news online this afternoon (It was from the early a.m. but I don't have TV reception, so I take what I can get.) The anchors and reporters kept saying, "The Station Fire."

6.5 years ago, I was in Rhode Island when The Station Nightclub Fire killed 100 people! It was/is known in the RI area as "The Station Fire." Hearing those words from reporters mouths again was distressing.

yeah...it's not so fun. I live a few miles from Palos Verdes and the air quality was awful the other day...not as bad as the fires a few months ago (it's not raining ash) but it's still pretty crappy. And, today's 90+ temps didn't help...we need rain!

    I have the unfortunate pleasure
of living in the city to the east of
La Canada (where the fires are north of
in the mountains). Several people at my church
have been forced to evacuate their homes in
    the northwest end of Altadena.

this fire is huge and is not even half contained but although it's been extremely hot and dry there has been no wind...so no homes have been lost but a lot of homes were and if there had been wind, i think 100's of homes would have been lost... the area that is burning hasn't burned in 30-40 years so actually this fire is good... it's burning off fuel now instead of during high winds

  • We've had to evacuate the studio where I work. We worked all weekend shooting scenes and then cleared out all the computers, cameras and drives.

    Wish us luck.

my thoughts are with all of you affected or potentially affected by these fires. i am hoping for calm winds and some rain, and some help for those that are fighting the fires. i hope everyone makes it out ok if things take a turn for the worst.

I live in La Canada - Flintridge 1/2 mile away from the fire. I live just below the country club, and the street, Starlight Crest which runs through the country club was the evacuation line and is 1/8th of a mile away. Luckily, the wind was calm or southerly and the fire was to our North. A northerly Santa Ana wind would have ravaged La Canada - Flintridge. The smoke in the mornings looked more like fog. On Saturday, the sun was completely obscured.

Norm, Mt Wilson is just over 5,700 feet high and isn't the highest mountain in Southern California. The highest is San Gorgonio Mountain, South of Big Bear, at 11,502 ft. Some maps have it at 11,499. Mt Wilson has a great view, and of course the camera if it hasn't burnt down.
Up here so high I start to shake, Up here so high the sky I scrape, I've no fear but for falling down, So look out below I am falling now, Falling down,...not staying down, Could’ve held me up, rather tear me down, Drown in the river

  • Nice chamber of commerce shots. A green light with traffic backed up and nobody moving, and all the mountains in the background ablaze. When I drive downtown to my house in La Canada - Flintridge, i have to worry about Dodger games. Football is on Sundays. We have the worst traffic. Football would be great because traffic to the games wouldn't affect commuters because of Sundays. But no, we don't have football, we have baseball. With games that give rush hour commuters a kick in the balls with 50,000 extra people the commuters don't need. And what is baseball anyway? Basically 2 people playing catch. The pitcher and catcher throwing the ball back and forth with everybody else either standing there, or sitting on a bench. You can't even tell when the game starts by the sound of the crowd. I say, move the Dodgers to Camarillo or somewhere harmless to commuters and bring football back to LA.

I was just up at Runyon Canyon last night and it was pretty spectacular/chilling.

Thank god for weak winds though

I live near Mulholland/Beverly Glen, and though they are over a dozen miles away, the flames looked very intense, and very close!
  • Yeah, he's a good distance from the actual fires. Home loss has been minimal and they've been doing an amazing job at keeping them as controlled as possible

Looks like we sent 3 Hotshot crews to help out in Cali.... One crew was sent to the 120,000 acre blaze in the Angeles National Forest... it says that more then 3,600 firefighters from across the nation were battling that blaze....

148,458-Acre (232 square miles) Blaze Now 42 Percent Contained

    mount wilson observatory saved :)

oh yeah and it was intentionally started... so the two firefighters who died were murdered :(

Hopefully the worst has passed....stay safe mang!

I didn't see any reports about it being intentionally started...I wonder what the motive was (aside from stupidity)? I was dismayed (tho not surprised) to be told that these fires are often started by people who do seasonal work fighting fires....

yeah the fire's western front has been contained...the southeast front is still burning but it's just the widerness which i'm sure they are letting burn...better now than during a santa ana :)
