Why didn't anyone tell me how fucking brilliant this album is?

Just dug it out of some old vinyl I'd taken from my relatives years ago. I never thought I could love a song called "A Man Needs A Maid."

It feels like the perfect companion to Joni Mitchell's Blue.

Man needs a maid is a great song on a great album.

I love the man needs a maid/heart of gold combo on the archives volume 1

My fav song though from the album is Words. The first time i saw him back in 2000 he played that one and it was so awesome!

I agree that it's a terrific album. He's playing acoustic at the Vancouver benefit show on 9/12 & may well play something from it. Enjoy the show Hawkshore!
The solo piano versions of A Man Needs A Maid paired with Heart of Gold from 1971 are superb.
It was great to see him do Out On The Weekend during the 2007 tour - my first time seeing him do that song in person. Words was great in 2000 as well.
The songs from Harvest that I haven't seen him do live yet are There's A World and Alabama. He hasn't done either one live since the 70s so I choose not to hold my breath. ;)

I can't get it off the turntable. I knew so many songs from the album already, but as a whole, it's a masterpiece. I have Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere on the shelf too. Maybe my Neil Young renaissance has finally arrived. :)

I've got the DVD-A he released of Harvest (before he switched to blu ray). Remixed in surround sound, it's really good. Makes you feel like you are in the middle of the studio.
"You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.

It's easily my favourite album of all time by any band. I first heard it in about 1979 or 1980 (I was 4 years old t the time) and I will never ever get tired of hearing it. I used to work for HMV and when they launched their new website in 2006 the staff were asked to write reviews for albums and films that they loved for customers to read on the site. I reviewed Harvest and even though I left HMV 3 years ago my review is still on their website:

"Very rarely do you come across truly great albums. This is one of them. From the lazy harmonica and steel guitar of opener "Out On The Weekend," to the complex London Symphony Orchestra string arrangements on "A Man Needs A Maid," to electric guitar-led rockers such as "Alabama," 'Harvest' contains a little piece of every style that Neil Young is famous for and is still his most famous recording.

A low-key collection of deceptively laid back country-rock tunes coupled with terse lyrics and lucid observations on everything from drug abuse to finding true love, it also features Young's only hit single "Heart Of Gold."

In many ways the definitive Neil Young album, 'Harvest' is filled with songs that are as timeless today as when they were written nearly 35 years ago."
    “Do not postpone happiness”
    (Jeff Tweedy, Sydney 2007)

“Put yer good money on the sunrise”
    (Tim Rogers)

Massey Hall 71, Man Needs A Maid > Heart Of Gold version is just beautiful, just neil and none of this over the top orchestra. Also this is the version where he says 'man feels afraid' which isn't on the studio.

    No youtube video :(

Just wanted to say that if you're on the fence about purchasing Archives Vol. 1,
The North Country disc (Harvest era disc) on DVD or Blu-Ray is insane. Every album track minus Out on the Weekend and There's A World (though the latter is represented on video of Neil cutting it with the LSO) as well as outtakes (Bad Fog Of Loneliness, JTTP), studio session video (A Man Needs A Maid, Alabama, Gator Stomp, There's A World) and random hidden videos/interviews of Neil around that time. The perfect document of the era in Neil Young history.
Using the word "methinks" in your message board posts doesn't make you look smart.

  • was my first neil album that i listened to front to back...i really can't think of an album that suites the fall better for me. All of his lyrics hit so damn close to home that you feel so much in it. Definitely gonna listen to it today.

that is a good disc. I'm also very partial to the one with the unreleased song Everybody's Alone... that song is pretty awesome.

Harvest is such a brilliant album, but neil has so many of those
