Beer without hops?

So I went back to the allergist today to see what other foods I'm allergic to and got some bad news. I LOVE hoppy beer. I love my Indian Pal Ale's, but I found out I'm moderately allergic to hops.

Any suggestions? I'm assuming Guinness has hops which also sucks for me.

I'm googling around and not finding much info on it. :?

At least I'm not allergic to grapes. I can drink all the red wine I want!

A beer without hops? Seems like an oxymoron to me...but, hey I'm sure they'll have it somewhere.

Good luck on your quest, and I'm sorry to hear about your newly discovered allergy. That's a drag man. :(

I'm hearing clear bottled beer because sunlight damages hops.. is this accurate? I'm ok with Corona, but there's not too many clear bottle beers that I think I'd like.

I've never heard that theory. That's interesting...

Are the effects of your allergy intolerable? Perhaps you could experiment and find a beer that sets you off very little, or in the best case, not at all.

and I agree on clear bottles...not too many good beers in those. The colored glass is actually used for the taste and quality reasons, so your afore mentioned theory maybe correct. Looks like you've got some researching to do. ;)

So does drinking beer make you sick?
...obviously too much beer will get anyone sick...but you know what I mean!

If not, I wouldn't worry about it.

I too am a big fan of hoppy beer!

    Mmmm...

I don't feel the effects at all. The problem is I'm allergic to a lot of foods on my insides. Off and on I have troubles swallowing food because my esophagus is inflamed. I just cut out the things I'm highly allergic too, apples, bananas, seafood and nuts. Only seafood gives me a noticable reaction.

I think I'm just going to pretend I never took the hops allergy test today. :/

A bunch of foods I eat that I'm allergic to are slowly damaging my asophagus.. Other than that, just on and off troubles swallowing food, I feel no effects besides swallowing.. I'm moderately allergic to hops. I already cut out everything I'm highly allergic to, which was a lot of things I was having everyday I wasn't aware of.
  • Time to drink wine my friend.

I too was a huge beer drinker in my early days.

But as I aged and began to explore the great winers of Virginia my taste for vino grew.

It seems like you know what does and does not effect you. I think if you get to the point where you don't feel well or have some adverse reaction to drinking beer, then you may consider other options.

Thats most likely what I'm going to do. I've already cut out a bunch of things I have in my diet I was having everyday that I was even more allergic too. Really its stuff thats been building up inside of me for years. I think I'll let hops pass. I only binge on beer once a week, maybe twice. Same with rice. I love rice and orange juice. I just won't have these things every day like I was.

I have the same problem... Corona kills me, guess the clear bottle theory isn't true. Yeungling (from PA) is ok for me, but still bothers me a little. But it sucks not to drink beer when your out b/c the serve you wine from a box in bars (ew) and I don't like any other alcohol.

Looks like you're gonna have to go out on a limb for it. Sucks, man.

Hoegarden is some good beer. It's the Belgian version of wheat beer. I didn't think it was possible to make beer without hops. That's like one of the essential ingredients.

That's one allergy I would choose to ignore.

Actually, beer was made for thousands of years without hops. Hops was first used around 400 or 500 years ago to help keep the beer from spoiling when transporting it over the ocean.

When my mother was a young woman she learned she was allergic to hops. She has quite a few food allergies. But unlike you, drinking beer gave her an allergic reaction so she just had to give it up. Other alcohol doesn't bother her.

That is fucking horrible. I thought i had it bad with my shellfish allergy but damn man that just sucks!

I'm pretty sure you can drink miller lite, bud lite, coors, and pretty much any big name american lager as i've never TASTED hops in those beers
