Is Eddie A Top 10 Singer?

Rolling Stone 100 Greatest Singers (http://www.rollingstone.com/news/covers ... rs/page/10)
does not have Eddie in the top 10. Why was he overlooked? Do you think he deserves to be there?

It isn't a strictly rock and roll list, though, so maybe that's why. But I still think Eddie belongs in at least the top 15. His voice is iconic.

In your opinion, who are the top 5 best rock singers and why?

Vedder for his song writing and style and emotion of voice
Cobain for his guitar work and overall anger in his voice
Cornell for overall loud vocals and early solo songs

I feel that Eddie is but maybe I'm biased. But Rolling Stone has zero credibility in the music world anymore and seem to be more of a tabloid magazine now.

Technically Eddie isn't one of the greatest singers ever.

Pearl Jam is more than the sum of their parts, and t hat what makes them great.

Also, what is the criteria for truly great singing in rock n roll? For me, you have to convey emotion and you have to be able to scream really, really well.

I think it's all a matter of opinion. Dylan is #7 on the Rolling Stone list. If I had a list of top 100 song writers Dylan is easily in the top 5. As far as singers he probably doesn't make the cut.

Rolling Stones recent pieces on Goldman Sachs and America's war on drugs were phenomenal, albeit they were not about music.
  • i love eddie vedder in a non-gay way. but he probably isn't a top 10 or even 20 pure "singer" when compared to all genres of popular music. he has an iconic voice, yes. amazing "golden" baritone, yes. but compared to the balladeers in pop music, he doesn't have the range or vocal clarity.

if broken down into a hard rock genre/category, no doubt. he's probably top 5 within that realm.

Eh, I'm definitely biased. Probably wouldn't have put him in Top Ten, but definitely on the list. Oh well, like someone above said, it IS Rolling Stone. ;)

Having said that, I would have put Jeff Buckley in the Top Ten for sure. No contest.

I don't think the top ten list is that bad but I wouldn't have Dylan in there And as much as I love Bruce, I'd definitely put Eddie's singing above his. And Kurt? C'mon!! Putting Kurt in the top 100 and not having Eddie is a joke!

Daltrey should also be higher. IMO

I’m not one to really comment on this as I think Pete Townshend has the greatest voice in the world. Hahahaha

It's certainly the one that reaches deep down in my soul, more than anyone else ever.

    But I just love Pete.

Top 10 of all time? Probably not. My favourite top 10? Of course.

Here is my take. I don't necessarily agree with Rolling Stone's choices, but if I did all of my research and had to make a list, I doubt he would crack top 10 greatest.

Dude, no he wasn't. His sound was perfect for his band and his songwriting. I know what you're trying to get at. I mean, you won't see any Hendrix-style solos (or any traditional guitar solo) from Kurt Cobain. But that stuff doesn't have a place in Nirvana's type of music so it doesn't matter.

I dont know if its included on the list, but they show all the people who voted for these in the issue it was in, they asked a bunch of other music artists, I was looking at it and when I saw Justin Timberlakes name I knew this list was a joke.

As a rock singer, Ed is unquestionably top ten. He doesn't have the range of someone like Cornell, but he has an exquisite tone, and a hell of a lot of power behind it. My jaw nearly dropped when they started with Release at the O2 - he sang it perfectly, and that has to be one of the most difficult songs to sing - it pushes his range to the limit, and he nearly always nails it.

In terms of other singers, Cornell is the most obvious one to me. Despite what he's done recently, in his prime, he was (and still can be) stunning. Even Ed recently said that he thinks Cornell is the best singer we have. Cornell not only has the ability to emote on a grand level, like Ed, but he has an incredible range, which puts him in a different league altogether.

Edddie has a better voice, and is a much better singer than many on that list. Willie Nelson cannot sing. He has an annoying but recognizable twang to his voice, but he isn't anywhere near a good or excellent singer, or is to be considered someone who has a good voice.

I find Eddie's voice much warmer and more listenable than Cornell's. He doesn't have the same depth of emotion that Eddie has. Cornell obviously has a great voice, though.

Agreed . . . in all honesty, I don't think Eddie is an AMAZING singer . . . his voice is fantastic and it ROCKS, but certainly not one of the greatest in the world. Maybe back in the day, but I really so think that his voice has suffered over the years . . .

Don't get me wrong either, he can still belt it out occasionally, I just don't think he deserves top 10, even top 15 recognition :?

I love Ed but singing he is not top ten. That list really sucks too, by the way what the hell are the criteria?

    as a front man maybe

his voice is too hoarse on some songs to be top ten. His quiet voice is top ten though.. His vocals on Dead man walking soundtrack are his best work. Some of his ITW stuff a close second. Who would yu take out of the top ten, and of all the people before Ed can we really say he is better than say Paul McCartney, mick Jagger, Robert Plant? I don't think so

Was he listed as one of the best voices or someone who was voting?

He seems to know ALOT about music's history.
    I wouldn't consider his opinion a joke.
It would be more of a joke if it was strictly editors voting.
