Question, Pearl Jam allusion in Porcupine Tree song

Hi to all. Porcupine tree is a new band for me, a great discovery, but the other day, I notice a pearl jam allusion in a porcupine tree song. The song is "Fear of a Blank Planet" and the lyrics is:
My friend says he wants to die
He's in a band
They sound like Pearl Jam
The clothes are all black
The music is crap
What does it means with "The music is crap"??
Do they think that pearl jam music is crap??
or the band of his friend sounds like crap.
PD: Sorry if my english isn't good.

Pretty much assholes if you ask me. Any band that knocks other (good) bands are just douche bags.

Butt anyone has read something about it??
maybe an interview or something

je je je... good answer
but I think Steven Wilson wanted to say that he don't like bans that sound like others.

He can continue to pat himself on the back for having a "different" sounding band while I rock the fuck out to Pearl Jam.

Just placed a preorder @ amazon.ca for the new release that's coming out the end of June over the weekend. Preorders sold out over @ amazon.com. http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=4740
I really enjoy their music. Arriving somewhere but not here song really got me hooked on this band. I did a trade few year's back for some of their works. I bought all their albums on CD. But to this day, Deadwing, is my favorite record by them.

The song is written from the perspective of an overstimulated, prescription-drug-numbed, bored modern teen. Throughout all of the verses, this person seems to hate everything and to be emotionally dead. Everything from his parents to pornography is the target of scorn. This includes his friend's band, who allegedly sound like Pearl Jam. For all we know the band could even be quite good, but the narrative voice in this song is quick to dismiss them as crap.
It is an extremely large leap to interpret this as a dig from Steven Wilson at PJ. I am not aware that he has ever addressed that particular lyric in an interview, so I could be wrong.

I agree. This release is fn amazing. The camera work and audio are exceptional. They seem to catch every Gavin Harrison's fills wich are so awesome. The 3 Signify songs are perfect. I was listening to the audio of this on my way into work today. Perfect concert release.
The audio's so clear you can really appreciate when he calls Pearl Jam's music crap.
