My life is changing

so after working in a job/field I've absolutely hated I dropped pretty much everything in my life and am going back to get my master's in education with certifications in elementary and special education. Not sure why I'm writing this other than to let people know that life's too short and fun to feel trapped and stuck in something you don't want to do and that there's always chances no matter how far you feel you're into anything. do what you want.

thanks for reading.

  • That's absolutely wonderful. I'm a teacher myself, and in my opinion there's no other profession that is more rewarding. You'll do great!

I told my oldest sister that I don't plan on retiring until I'm in my 80's. I just don't think I'll have enough to live comfortably. She told me no one would hire me. I guess my workforce space would be taking up a younger person's future. I'm 41 today, and by the time I'm 50 I'll start my Master's in Library Science and go from there onward. By the time I'm 80 I'll be so good at something everyone will want to hire me! It may be apple pie baking or maybe I'll own my own bookstore, but by golly I'll be pursued for my expertise!

I want to go live overseas for a year with family and try find work there maybe at a bar or restaurant just to earn money to help with food and bills, but that would mean having to quit my job here.
It is a big change but I need change and am feeling unhappy here.

    Good luck to the OP!

Life is too short. I'm 52 now and wish I could go back and do things differently. Too late now, everyone thinks I'm too old and ready to kick the bucket at anytime.

I'm trying to persuade one of my daughters to disappear and see the world and experience something but no she wants to get a house, mortgage etc. Breaks my heart.

Just want to say that I think it's awesome you're doing what you want to do. I truly envy you. I've been working a stressful job in a town that I hate (and being away from friends and family to make things even tougher), and I think about doing what you did every day. And I've been only doing this for a year. The whole day-to-day micro-managing BS that I need to do, working under people and putting up with their lists of crap just in hopes of moving up in the company, this shit is just not for me. I'm an active person who loves helping people and my job just doesn't cut it. I've always told myself that I won't let money influence me, but that's what I've been doing for the past year. Got some things in the works next month, so changes me be on the horizon for me as well come the end of September. Thanks for sharing your experiences and best of luck!!! :D

    Good thread :)

Congrats to you and you are absolutely right about life being too short. I'm just thinking about where i was last year compared today. I'm in a so much better place.

    Good for you!

Good for you, taking the leap. I hope it works out as well for you as I know it has for me. Just yesterday i found my master's program entrance essay, as well as some journal notes from around that time. I think I knew what I wanted then, but there was all kinds of uncertainty about how I(t) might turn out, if I'd be any good at all. I now have a full year under my belt as a social worker, and I could not have made a better decision - despite all, those grad school loans. ;)
    Best of luck.

I'm currently 2 years into a primary teaching degree. I'm doing a special Ed subject atm. It's good, can't see myself focusing on special Ed though.

    Good luck

this type of thing is constantly on my mind. I got my professional masters in something I was really interested in-and school was really fun and interesting! But as far as work goes...I'm sort of working in my field but it's never as interesting as school was. And I never seem to really get anywhere career-wise. But I really don't know what I would do otherwise. Everything I've been interested academically just doesn't seem the same in the context of day-to-day work.

It's good to move on and change when you know what you want to move onto. I think it will make your life seem longer too.
  • thank you everyone for the great words. I worked in the advertising field and a few days after I made my decision Ghost popped up on my Ipod and these lines kind of helped me justify my feelings:

"The TV, she talks to me
    Breaking news and building walls
Selling me, what I dont need
I didn't know soap made you taller"

and while we're on the subject of riot act:

"No matter how cold the winter, there's a spring time ahead"

Good luck..I'm finishing my grad degree in middle childhood education with certification in students with disabilities this semester..I've been working in NYC inner-city schools for over a year and it's nothing like what I expected....though now I'm prepared for anything..lol...anyway, elementary level students are not quite as fucking crazy, so you should be okay ;) ..

It's a great occupation. My apologies for all the education theory you'll have to endure in the next few years. I just finished my Masters in Secondary Ed/ Social Studies.

Good for you! It takes guts to do that and you should be proud of yourself. And you're right...since most people must work, you may as well be doing something you love. I went back to school 1 year ago and I'm so glad I did. All the best to you! The world needs more great teachers. ;)
